Tragedy at Australian beach as British couple drown despite desperate rescue attempts

  • A British couple died after drowning at Shellharbour Beach in New South Wales, Australia.
  • Emergency services were called on Wednesday morning following reports of two people struggling in the water.
  • Bystanders, including two off-duty nurses, pulled the 66-year-old man and 64-year-old woman from the water and attempted CPR.
  • Paramedics continued resuscitation efforts, but the couple, who were on holiday with their family, could not be revived and died at the scene.
  • New South Wales police are preparing a report for the coroner, and an inspector advised swimmers to stay between the flags at patrolled beaches.
