Former Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu has tragically been found dead among the rubble following the Turkish earthquake. Inaccurate reports last week claiming the Ghanaian had been found were debunked, with several national outlets and broadcasters running the story.
However, his partner, Claire Rupio, confirmed to the BBC that Atsu was still missing. The 31-year-old was trapped with some of his Hatayspor teammates after the apartment block they were staying in collapsed.
Just hours before the earthquake, Atsu scored a 97th-minute winner to clinch three points against Kasimpasa. The devastating news of his passing was confirmed by his agent, Nana Sechere, on social media.

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well-wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning,” a Twitter post read. “My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.
"I ask that whilst we make the necessary arrangements, that everyone would please respect the privacy of the family during this very difficult time."
Tributes poured in from football fans following the announcement. Newcastle supporters mourned a player who was key to winning the Championship under Rafa Benitez in 2016-17.
The winger initially arrived on loan from Chelsea before signing permanently the following summer. Highlights in Toon colours include memorable strikes against Rotherham United and Cardiff City away from home.
