Tragedy as body pulled from River Irwell sparking huge police cordon

A body was pulled from the River Irwell this morning, sparking a huge emergency services presence.

Police officers were called to the scene on the border of Castlefield and Salford just after 8.05am. They were initially called to a report of concern for the welfare of a person in the water.

A body was tragically found. Police have not confirmed the gender of the person at this stage.

A large cordon was put in place surrounding the river banks near St George's Island as emergency services dealt with the incident. Emergency vehicles, including police cars, fire engines and ambulances, were stationed on both sides of the river on Woden Street and Kelso Place.

A footbridge was taped off, as well as the area surrounding the river banks. A private ambulance was also pictured at the scene earlier.
