Traffic 'gridlocked' as three car crash closes road for two hours

Traffic was "gridlocked" after a three car crash closed a major road for two hours.

Merseyside Police received a 999 call at around 3.54pm on Tuesday, November 22, following reports of a crash on the Formby Bypass, at the junction of North End Lane. Once police arrived at the scene, they found three cars, a BMW, Peugeot and VW Tiguan, had crashed.

Officers requested help from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service before closing Formby Bypass in both directions. Once fire crews arrived at the scene at 4.03pm they found all three vehicles on all four wheels and all occupants "conscious and breathing".

The people who were inside two of the cars were out of their vehicles by the time the fire service arrived. The person inside the third car waited until emergency services arrived until they got out of their car unaided.

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) were on scene shortly after and paramedics assessed all casualties involved. They're believed to have minor injuries.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service attended a road traffic collision (RTC) at the junction of North End Lane, Hightown and Formby Bypass on Tuesday, November 22. Crews were alerted at 3.54pm and two fire engines were on scene at 4.03pm.

"On arrival crews were met with a three vehicle RTC, all vehicles were on all four wheels. Occupants of two vehicles were out of their vehicles prior to Fire Service attendance.

"All occupants were conscious and breathing. One occupant remained in their vehicle until Fire Service attendance. North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) were on scene shortly after and paramedics assessed all casualties involved.

"The occupant that remained inside the vehicle then vacated their vehicle unaided. Crews made the scene safe before departing at 4.31pm."

Following the crash, traffic was queuing back for miles and causing major issues on the roads tonight. AA Traffic sensors are detecting delays on the Formby Bypass, North Wend Lane, Lady Green Lane and roads in Thornton.

One eyewitness said: "Every route in is absolutely gridlocked! You’re best just sitting in the queue on the bypass."
