Traffic backed up on M6 after van flips over after crash

Traffic is currently backed up on the M6 after a van flipped over following a crash.

Traffic had been stopped on the M6 Southbound at junction 21 following a crash that caused a van to overturn. North West Motorway Police said via it's social media account the M6 was closed at junction 21 Birchwood due to a crash.

The police added all occupants were out the vehicle but traffic had been stopped while the emergency services remained at the scene making it safe. An image released by police shortly after 2pm showed an overturned lorry in the middle lane of the motorway and traffic stopped a short distance away.

Traffic monitor INRIX said the M6 Thelwall Viaduct entry slip road was closed for more than an hour with queuing traffic due to the overturned vehicle and people slowing down to look at the accident. It added congestion stretched back to junction 22 at Newton-Le-Willows.

National Highways North West has now said the collision has been cleared and all lanes have reopened. But there is still around five miles of congestion on approach causing delays of 45 minutes above usual journey times.
