Parts of a fountain in Trafalgar Square have frozen solid as sub-zero temperatures continue to grip London.
As the mercury remained around 1C on Friday, passersby could be seen stopping to photograph the fountain where jets of water have frozen into arcs, and statues of dolphins and merpeople are adorned with icicles.
The capital is in for another cold couple of days this weekend but temperatures are set to rise next week, reaching as high as 12C on Monday.
A severe cold weather warning remains in place across England until then.
A yellow warning for ice has been issued across London and the south of England for Sunday, while a warning of ice and snow has been issued for the north of England and Scotland.
The Met Office warns rain and snow falling on frozen surfaces will lead to icy conditions in London on Sunday, and could cause travel disruption.
But things are then set to change, with temperatures rising in London and elsewhere next week.
The Met Office’s website says: “A rapid transition to milder conditions is expected through Sunday, with southwestern regions seeing much milder temperatures through Sunday and this reaching northeastern regions by Monday.”
The warmer weather should bring some relief to Londoners who have watched their energy usage soar in recent days.
Snow blanketed the capital on Sunday night, bringing both joy to Londoners and chaos to the capital’s transport networks, and temperatures have since plummeted to as low as -5C.
But The Met Office adds that next week’s milder interlude is likely to be “relatively short”, with cold weather set to return, at least in northern areas of the country.
