Tracing 'Kanpur glory' in Indian cricket history ahead of India vs Bangladesh Test

Kanpur has a special place in Indian cricket history as the Green Park Stadium is the venue where India defeated Australia for the first time in Test cricket, besides it being a fortress for India since 1983.

The second Test of India's two-match series against Bangladesh will be played in Kanpur, starting September 27, after India dominated the first match with a 280-run victory to take an unassailable 1-0 lead.

But here's a trip down memory lane before India go for a series sweep in two days' time:

HISTORIC WIN 65 YEARS AGO

Going into the Kanpur Test during Australia's tour of India in 1959-60, India had never beaten the Aussies and also lost the first Test of the series.

Opting to bat first, India had a miserable opening day and got shot out for just 152 as left-arm pacer Alan Davidson took 5 for 31 and leg-spinner Richie Benaud tied up the home team to end with figures of 4 for 63.

All-rounder Bapu Nadkarni was India's top-scorer with a knock of 25.

But off-spinner Jasubhai Patel had the most memorable outing of his short Test career. The wily spinner foxed the Australians and was unplayable in the 35.5 overs he delivered to take 9 for 69.

It was only because of half-centuries by opener Colin McDonald (53) and Neil Harvey (51), and a useful 41 by Davidson, that the Australians could score 219 and take a 67-run lead in the first innings.

But India came up with a brilliant response in their second innings, led by opener Nari Contractor's 74, who got the much needed support from Abbas Ali Baig (36) and Chandu Borde (44).

It followed a game-changing 76-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Ramnath Kenny (51) and Nadkarni (46) that gave Indian bowlers the runs they needed to defend in the fourth innings.

Despite Davidson's seven-wicket spell (7 for 93), which gave him a match haul of 12 wickets, India finished at 291 all out to set Australia a challenging 225 to win on a wearing track.

Patel continued to spell his magic and took 5 for 55, while batting allrounder Polly Umrigar took 4 for 27 with his off-spin. The duo bowled 50.4 overs between them, out of the 57.4 Australia faced before folding up tamely for just 105 and lost by 119 runs.

Patel finished with a match-haul of 14 wickets for 124 runs in India's historic win.

UNBEATEN RUN

Talking about more history associated with the Green Park Stadium, India haven't lost a Test at the venue since October 1983, when West Indies won by an innings and 83 runs.

Since then, out of the 9 Tests played in Kanpur, India have won five and drawn four.
