Joining the Supercars championship in 2026, Toyota has revealed the Gen3 Supra model that will be driven by Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood.

The Japanese automotive giant, which dominates vehicle sales in Australia, unveiled a full-size clay model of the GR Supra on Friday at Mount Panorama ahead of Sunday's Bathurst 1000 race.

The GR "Supracar" redesign is based on the classic rear-drive coupe proportions of the Supra, with the clay model's exterior influenced by the original FT-1 Supra concept from 2014.

Announcing its intention to join the Australian touring car category in September, Toyota Australia aims to enter at least four vehicles in the 2026 Supercars championship and participate in the race for at least five years.

Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU) will be Toyota's homologation partner, with Mostert and Wood to be behind the wheel of two Supras in 2026.

Mostert, second in the championship standings, and Wood currently race in the Ford Mustangs.

Featuring racing-focused wide fenders, front splitter and rear diffusers, side skirts and a large Supercar rear wing, Toyota sales and marketing vice-president Sean Hanley called the Supra model the "spirit of speed".

"This is a car that's meant to be in Supercars," Hanley said.

"When you see the style and you see the modifications we made, it looks like a car that should be coming across  Mount Panorama.

"We have the right sport. We have the right car. We're ready to have a crack at this race."

Toyota will be the first manufacturer other than Ford and General Motors to race in the competition since 2019, when Nissan pulled out of the category.

The automotive giant is no stranger to Australia's touring cars circuit, with the GR Cup, featuring Toyota 86 coupes, a longtime support category on the Supercars track.

The brand also competes in many motorsport events around the world, including NASCAR and Formula Drift in the United States, Super GT and Super Formula in Japan, and Formula Three in Europe.
