A Townsville private school teacher charged with making child exploitation material has been remanded in custody to face court again tomorrow.
Leonard John Farren, 65, was arrested by detectives on Sunday.
The Ignatius Park College teacher is facing eight charges, including making child exploitation material and engaging in sexual activity with persons under 16.
Queensland Police have alleged he had access and subscription to nine different child exploitation material groups.
It is also alleged Mr Farren, who lives at Toolakea, north of Townsville, committed the offences in the days leading up to his arrest on Sunday.
A 2021 newsletter from Ignatius Park College listed the teacher as a faculty leader in industrial design and technologies.
In a letter to parents and caregivers on Monday, principal Shaun Clarke said the arrest of Mr Farren was "being treated with the highest priority by Ignatius Park College".
"Last night we were contacted by the police to advise us that one of our staff members had been charged with child exploitation offences," he said.
"This was the first that the college knew of this matter.
"Police assured us that their investigations were not related to the staff member's work, or related in any way to students from our college."
Mr Clarke said the college immediately stood Mr Farren down and the action would remain in place throughout the legal process.
Lawyers appeared on behalf of Mr Farren during a brief hearing in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday morning.
The matter was adjourned until tomorrow when an application for bail is expected to be made.
Mr Farren was remanded in custody.
The eight charges in total include two counts of making child exploitation material, one count of possessing child exploitation material, and one count of using a carriage service to engage in sexual activity with a person under 16.
He is also charged with one count of using a carriage service to solicit child abuse material, one count of encouraging the use of a child exploitation material website, one count of an offence involving conduct on three or more occasions and two or more people, and one count of possessing tainted property.
