Town turns out to honour war dead in rededication ceremony that stopped traffic for seven minutes

A ceremony to mark 100 years since the installation of the Renfrew Cenotaph took place earlier this week.

The memorial, which commemorates those who died in World War One, World War Two, and the Falklands War, was erected on August 2, 1922 and has been a feature of Hairst Street ever since.

The rededication on Tuesday was organised by Renfrew Community Council, who have hailed the event a great success.

In attendance were ex-military servicemen, local politicians, cadets, schoolchildren, and residents of Renfrew and Renfrewshire.

Lindsay McKillop, secretary of the community council said: “Renfrew really did remember. The traffic was stopped for seven minutes.

“It was ‘a sight to behold’ was one of the positive comments received.

“Massive thanks to the young people who stopped to see what was going on and did so in a respectful manner.

“It was lovely to see so many young people represented in the cadets. It was very much a community event.”

Among those in attendance was Renfrewshire North and West MSP Natalie Don, who described the event as a “very important event for the town.”

She said: “I would like to congratulate Renfrew Community Council for all the hard work they’ve put into organising today’s event. This is a very important event for the town, and one that respects the town’s history and those who died in times of conflict.

“Renfrew is a close-knit town and those on the memorial’s Roll of Honour would have been well known in their local communities.

“It was a moving ceremony and I was pleased to meet with community council members after the event to thank them for organising this re-dedication.”

Alongside the rededication event, further efforts are being made to memorialise those who fell in the service of their country, including a small exhibition at Renfrew museum from August 2-5.
