Town's plan to create living memorial to Queen Elizabeth II

A Merseyside town has plans for a lasting memorial to Queen Elizabeth II.

Organisers in Moreton plan to create a touching and long-lasting tribute to Her Majesty that will honour her memory for generations to come. Moreton in Bloom, a group that tends to the town's flowers and also prepares the local area for the yearly Britain in Bloom competition, plans to create a community orchard full of fruit trees,

The orchard, provisionally named "Lilibet's Garden" after Her Majesty's childhood nickname, will be planted on Pasture Road, close to Moreton train station, unless another, more suitable patch of land becomes available.

The idea was manifested as organisers saw that mourning local people were leaving cut flowers in memory of Her Majesty at a mural commissioned by the group for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee earlier this year. Alison White, secretary for Moreton in Bloom, said: "The news last week definitely touched a lot of people in the local community.

"I just remember how quiet it was everywhere. I went out for lunch on a Friday and everywhere was very quiet. People were very solemn.

"We thought that the mural would attract a lot of cut flowers and we wanted to give the opportunity for the community to pay a longer lasting tribute. That's where we came up with the idea.

"The Queen also had her 'Queen's Canopy' project so we thought it was a really fitting tribute. So we got in touch with the local council and asked for permission to use a piece of land. They said yes and were very supportive.

"Then we managed to raise over £500 in 24 hours with help from the local community, which'll go along way to buying the fruit trees and means for our community that people will be able to go in and pick the fruit for free.

"We have a provisional location set up on pasture road in Moreton, but that could change."
