Two dramatic police pursuits took place overnight on Sunday in Merthyr Tydfil. One resulted in a police dog hunting down a suspect after a crash while the other saw a 'stinger' device used to deflate a vehicle's tyres.
A South Wales Police spokesman said: "Shortly after 10.30pm yesterday, a report was received of a car being driven at high speeds in the Swansea Road area of Merthyr Tydfil. A pursuit took place and a stinger was deployed which brought the car to a halt in the Pontmorlais area of the town. A 19-year-old man from Swansea Road was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and is being questioned at Merthyr Tydfil police station. Two other men arrested at the same time have been released with no further action."
The second pursuit saw a driver allegedly "go off road" before heading back onto a route and crashing. A force spokesman said: "Following an initial report received shortly before 12.45am concerning a car failing to stop in central Merthyr Tydfil, officers from the roads policing unit became involved in a pursuit. Following a limited pursuit the car collided with street furniture and the driver made off."
Police dog Frankie was deployed and a suspect was caught "shortly afterwards". A 18-year-old from Mountain Hare, has been charged with failing to stop, driving without insurance and dangerous driving in connection to the second incident, which was unrelated to the first.
