A popular town centre takeaway has been slapped with a one star hygiene rating.
Cheung Wah Chinese restaurant on Claughton Street, St Helens, was handed the rating after an inspection on January 5. Ratings range from zero to five and judge food handling businesses on their hygiene in food storage and preparation.
The scores are done by local authority hygiene teams. A health officer will look at three criteria types during an inspection:
- How hygienically the food is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored.
- The cleanliness, layout, lighting and ventilation of the building.
- How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe.

Health officers found that Cheung Wah was in need of improvement in the first two categories, while it needed major improvement in the management of food safety. Other local venues were also inspected in January.
Among these was Four Seasons superstore in Carr Mill, which was handed zero stars, the lowest possible rating. Inspectors found that the off licence needed to make major improvements in its management of food safety and the cleanliness and condition of the building.
Some eateries received better ratings however, with the Colliers Arms pub in King's Moss granted four stars. Also inspected on January 5, the business' hygienic food handling and management of food safety were rated to be good.
The cleanliness and condition of the building were reported to be satisfactory.
Cheung Wah and Four Seasons were approached for comment.
