One man, who lives on the tenth floor of the tower block, said: "The smoke was as high as the fifth floor. They got us out and they got the fan to clear the smoke out.
"We can’t get back in because the lift is not working. This is the first time [I’ve seen a fire]. It scared me.
"You tell yourself you need to get out down the stairs and the smoke came up as far as the fifth floor. I have never seen anything like that before."
The fire has since been put out, although firefighters remain at the scene.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 11.30am this morning (Wednesday 14th June), six fire engines from Manchester central, Blackley, Philips Park, Salford central, Broughton and Gorton fire station were called to reports of a building fire involving a flat on Kentford Drive, Manchester.
“Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatuses used two hose reels and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire.
“Firefighters have been in attendance for around an hour and twenty minutes and are still at the scene.”
