Recent reports from Greece have revealed that two tourists, one from the United States and one from the Netherlands, have gone missing while hiking in separate incidents. These disappearances have occurred against the backdrop of a heatwave sweeping across the Mediterranean country.
The first case involves a 59-year-old American man named Albert Calibet, who vanished on the island of Amorgos while following a route towards the village of Katapola. According to local authorities, Calibet, a frequent visitor to Amorgos, has been coming to the island almost every year for the past decade.
Meanwhile, on the island of Samos, a 74-year-old Dutch tourist has been missing since Sunday after going hiking in the Marathokampou area. A large-scale search and rescue operation, involving police, fire brigade, volunteers, and local residents, is currently underway to locate the missing tourist.
Despite the extensive search efforts, there have been no updates on the whereabouts of either man. The Greek police, along with other agencies, are utilizing air support in their search operations.
These incidents come shortly after the tragic discovery of the body of British TV personality Michael Mosley, who went missing while hiking in the scorching temperatures on the Greek island of Symi. Mosley's disappearance had been reported by his wife, leading to a multi-day search before his body was found.
Greece is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to peak soon. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service has issued an orange warning for heat, indicating the seriousness of the weather conditions in the region.
