A tourist plunged into the sea off India’s western coast after a parasailing ride at Baga Beach in Goa went wrong.
The unidentified man was quickly pulled to safety by the crew of the sailboat after the cable connecting his parachute to the vessel suddenly snapped. The incident occurred on Monday.
While the man escaped without a serious injury, local authorities started an investigation into how the equipment failed.
Police were now “examining the circumstances surrounding the mishap”, local media reported.
The incident has once again brought attention to safety standards in India’s adventure tourism sector.
Such concerns aren’t new. A string of accidents in recent years has raised questions about training, equipment maintenance and oversight in such high-risk recreational sports.

In October last year, a trainee participating in a government-run paragliding event in the northern state of Uttarakhand lost control while attempting to land near the Tehri lake. The 26-year-old fell into the water but was rescued in time.
A few months earlier, a 25-year-old visitor from Ahmedabad died after his paraglider failed to gain proper lift during take-off in Indrunag, Himachal Pradesh.
The crash left the tourist as well as the pilot injured, and the former later succumbed to his injuries.
Another accident last January in Goa saw a 27-year-old woman from Pune and her instructor killed during a paragliding session. According to police reports, the pair crashed into a ravine shortly after launching from a cliff at the Keri plateau.
Such incidents have sparked repeated calls for stricter enforcement of safety protocols, better training for operators, and more rigorous checks on equipment used in adventure sports in the country. They have also prompted calls for clearer national guidelines and stricter penalties for violations.
Tourists, meanwhile, are being advised to check the credentials of service providers before signing up for any adventure sport in the country.
