Tourist dies after being washed from rocks at Chapmans Point near Esperance

Esperance Police has confirmed the drowning death of a 29-year-old tourist who was swept off rocks while taking photographs at a local beach.

It is believed the man was visiting Chapmans Point with friends when he was washed off rocks at about 1:10pm on Sunday.

WA Police spokesperson Sam Dinnison said it is understood the man, visiting from Pakistan,  could not swim and disappeared from onlookers' view.

He said attempts to throw a life ring were unsuccessful, but friends quickly sounded the alarm.

Esperance Police and St John WA attended the scene, along with Esperance Surf Life Saving Club, and vessels from the Department of Transport and the Port of Esperance.

The man's body has been recovered.

"I understand the water condition was quite rough," Mr Dinnison said.

"The boats were able to get close to the rocks. However, a Surf Life Saving jetski was used to get in close to recover him from the water."

Police said the man had only recently arrived in Western Australia from New South Wales and was travelling with friends.

"They [had] headed to the beach to take some photos," Mr Dinnison said.

Chapmans Point is a popular surf spot, a short drive from the CBD and at the western end of West Beach.

Anyone who has information regarding this incident, or who was at Chapmans Point at the time and who has not already spoken to police, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or provide their details online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au.

It is understood that the man's death marks the eighth rocks-related fatality off the Esperance coast since 2012.

On December 2, 2020 tourist Faycal Al Saidi drowned after being washed off rocks at Salmon Beach while taking pictures.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
