Tottenham vs Newcastle LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction

Tottenham vs Newcastle LIVE

Tottenham slumped to a second successive defeat of the new Premier League season as they were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United. Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scored the goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium that condemned Roberto De Zerbi to a first home loss since he took over the reins in north London.

Spurs dominated much of the proceedings in the capital, as Sandro Tonali was reunited with his old employers after his £100million switch earlier on this summer. The midfielder was ran ragged in the engine room by Lewis Miley, Joe Willock and Nico Gonzalez, who was making his debut for the Magpies after his £50m move from Manchester City.

Another former Man City man was also making his bow, with Omar Marmoush, signed on an initial loan with a £50m obligation to buy, starting from the off for Spurs. While he produced some promising moments, he was starved of any real goalscoring opportunities. Savio, the other arrival from the Etihad Stadium, missed the game through a muscular injury, De Zerbi confirmed ahead of kick off.

Spurs slump to second successive defeat

19:45 , Oli Gent

Second-half goals by Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa helped Newcastle inflict a second consecutive defeat of the Premier League season on big-spending Tottenham.

Eight players have been signed by Spurs this summer and they spent £100million on tempting Sandro Tonali away from the Magpies, but the North East club had the last laugh in the capital with a professional display to get Matthias Jaissle off the mark with his first win in the division.

Who will win this one?

Arrivals!

17:15 , Oli Gent

The Spurs players are in the building.

Can they conjure up a first league win of the campaign?

Can Spurs finish in the top six?

17:07 , Oli Gent

Michael Dawson, the former Tottenham defender, certainly thinks so...

Big chance!

17:00 , Oli Gent

A huge chance for Omar Marmoush to really get his Premier League career going, you feel.

The Egyptian struggled for game time behind Erling Haaland at Man City, but has the opportunity to make the No9 position his own in north London ahead of Solanke, while Richarlison’s future is up in the air.

He hasn’t been overly prolific in a City shirt, but neither have any of Spurs’ strikers since Harry Kane’s departure.

Have they finally found his heir?

De Zerbi explains Savio absence

16:42 , Oli Gent

“There was bad news yesterday, before training in the afternoon. He suffered muscle fatigue and the medical staff didn’t want to take a risk. I agree with them,” the Italian told Sky Sports.

The Spurs head coach is hoping that the Brazilian will be fit for the trip to Nottingham Forest next weekend.

As for the visitors...

16:37 , Oli Gent

Not much by way of a shock from Jaissle, who plumps for the same side as against Liverpool, but new man Nico comes into the midfield.

18-year-old Steur drops out for the Spaniard, who will add a touch more physicality to the engine room, as well as pinpoint passing. He won’t look to break the lines with any driving runs like the young Dutchman, but he will add some steel into the middle.

The back four looks solid. Amar Dedic was impressive against the Reds last time out, while Lewis Hall showed why he is on Manchester United’s wishlist. If Sven Botman can stay fit, he and Malick Thiaw look a superb partnership.

Joe Willock’s goal last week earns him a start here, while Harvey Barnes was on target against West Brom in the cup.

Yoane Wissa gets the nod once more over fellow big-money striker Nick Woltemade, whose future at St James’ Park is in doubt.

Spurs lineup analysed

16:32 , Oli Gent

Well, a real surprise from De Zerbi.

He throws Marmoush in straight from the get-go, but holds Savio back despite his brilliant start to life in north London in midweek.

Also no place for Richarlison in the squad, and that will spark transfer rumours.

Van de Ven will give the backline its much-needed pace, while Pedro Porro looks to be in an advanced wide right position, with Archie Gray continuing at right-back.

Sam Tabuteau reports

16:23 , Oli Gent

Well, no one was expecting that. Savio is not in the matchday squad at all. De Zerbi had said he could be in line for his full debut this evening, but he now appears to have picked up an injury issue. In more positive news, Omar Marmoush is in from the start, while Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven are back in the starting lineup.

Newcastle lineup

16:22 , Oli Gent

Subs: Jaouen, Schar, Bamba, Steur, Bamba, Murphy, Woltemade, Ramsey, Shahar

16:19 , Oli Gent

Spurs debut was Tonali's wake-up call

16:01 , Oli Gent

When Tottenham parted ways with the first nine figure transfer fee in the club’s history to sign Sandro Tonali, the perception was that he would be the poster boy for a new exciting era under Roberto De Zerbi, Sam Tabuteau writes.

The man for the big moments, a leader on and off the pitch and the central cog of Spurs’ well-oiled, newly-monied march back towards European qualification.

That mirage was shattered rather comprehensively on the first weekend of the season as Brentford’s Mamadou Sangare ran rings round the former Newcastle midfielder and left Spurs breathless.

What has De Zerbi said?

15:40 , Oli Gent

On Micky van de Ven’s fitness: “Van de Ven is right to play. We have to look, we have to understand the beginning part of the game. “

On others pushing for starts: “Like Savio, like Pedro, Marmoush is available to play, maybe also the beginning of the game. Robertson is like Udogie. Udogie is a good news for us because Udogie is very important and he played well 60 minutes, like was the plan.”

Standard Sport prediction

15:32 , Oli Gent

A tough one to call, considering how bad Spurs were last week and how surprisingly good the Magpies were after their stunningly bad transfer window.

De Zerbi’s men were much improved against Charlton, but it was a weakened Addicks side and it took the Premier League outfit a while to get going.

You would expect more changes to the lineup here, and it could warrant a more fluid and improved performance.

Tottenham to win, 2-1.

Newcastle team news

15:25 , Oli Gent

As for the visitors, they impressed in Matthias Jaissle’s first competitive game at the helm.

New £50million midfielder Nico Gonzalez, signed from Man City, could get the nod in the engine room, and one of Sean Steur and Lewis Miley could make way for the Spaniard.

Otherwise, there could be first league starts for fellow new recruits Bazoumana Toure, who opened his account for the club against West Brom in midweek, and Aladji Bamba, who came off the bench against Liverpool.

Lukas Hornicek is set to be reinstated in net after Ewen Jaoeun’s less than convincing debut in the Carabao Cup.

Spurs team news contd: Kudus return?

15:20 , Oli Gent

Savio is also in line to make his full debut. The Brazilian signed from City in a deal worth up to £85m earlier this week.

He made a dream start to life in north London by scoring and assisting against Charlton in the Carabao Cup second round.

Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro were given their first minutes of the season off the bench against Charlton, and De Zerbi revealed that both of them are in contention to start against Newcastle, while Mohammed Kudus is pushing for a place on the bench.

James Maddison, meanwhile, is expected to miss out against Newcastle with a shoulder injury sustained during Spurs’ 3-0 defeat to Brentford.

Tottenham team news: Marmoush debut?

15:15 , Oli Gent

Omar Marmoush is in contention to make his Tottenham debut this evening against Newcastle.

Marmoush signed for Spurs from Manchester City on Thursday, joining initially on loan with a £60million obligation to buy at the end of the season.

The Egyptian forward played no part of Man City’s opening game of the season last weekend, but De Zerbi has no concerns about the 27-year-old’s fitness.

De Zerbi will, though, have to weigh up whether to start him in place of Richarlison and Dominic Solanke, or name him on the bench.
