Tottenham vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction after Reds hold on

Tottenham vs Liverpool LIVE

Liverpool recorded back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since September with victory over nine-man Tottenham on Saturday evening. From the moment Xavi Simons was sent-off for a reckless tackle on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk in the first-half, Spurs were left with a massive mountain to climb and their resistance was broken early in the second half.

Alexander Isak, brought on at the break, took advantage of a poor pass from Cristian Romero to break the deadlock with a fine finish. However, Isak was not able to celebrate his second Premier League goal of the season as he took a whack from Micky van de Ven while shooting and had to be substituted straight after.

After Randal Kolo Muani had nearly equalised for Spurs, Hugo Ekitike got above Romero to head home a second for Liverpool and score his fifth goal in three league appearances. Richarlison set up a nervy finale, scoring minutes after his introduction but Romero’s dismissal for a second yellow card ended Spurs’ hopes of snatching an unlikely equaliser. The Premier League have issued a statement regarding the red card shown to Xavi Simons in the red card.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:28 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Not a great half by any means but let’s start with the biggest talking point, the Xavi Simons red card.

Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

18:23 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Half-time and Tottenham have done well to restrict Liverpool. They were the better team before Simons was sent off and have kept the visitors at arm's length since.

A difficult next 45 in store, but some hope for Thomas Frank's side.

HALF-TIME

18:22 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Goalless at the break but Spurs down to ten-men after Xavi Simons was sent-off for a reckless tackle on Virgil van Dijk.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:21 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45+3 min: One final Liverpool chance before the break as Mac Allister’s shot is deflected behind for a corner. Szoboszlai’s delivery comes all the way to Wirtz whose effort is blocked.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:18 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45+2 min: Bradley walking gingerly as he goes off for 30 seconds. It’s so close to half-time, would imagine a decision will be made during the break as to whether he continues.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:16 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45+1 min: Huge concern for Liverpool as Bradley appears to have injured himself while chasing Spence back in that last Tottenham attack.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:16 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45 min: Spence pinches the ball off Bradley in his own half, powers forward and gets into the box before trying to slip in between Bradley and Jones and then goes down appealing for a penalty.

Nothing given as three minutes of stoppage time is signalled.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:13 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

42 min: Spurs are getting some joy...from Liverpool corners.

Another break is on the horizon but Bergvall attempts an early pass which is cut out by Bradley with a fine recovery block.

Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

18:12 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Spurs have rallied well since Simons' dismissal.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:12 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

41 min: From one end to the other in a flash for Spurs, Kudus picks out Porro with a nice switch of play but the defender’s cross for Spence is a touch too strong.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:11 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:07 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

18:03 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

This has changed the whole complexion of the game.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:03 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

32 min: RED CARD!

After review, Xavi Simons’ yellow card has been changed to red.

Totenham down to ten-men.

Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

18:02 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

It was late and studs up from Simons. A nasty challenge.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:01 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

31 min: An on-field VAR review has been called, Simons might be off here.

Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

18:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

A yellow for Simons, who has a tendency to be a bit reckless in the tackle. One to keep an eye on.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

18:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

30 min: Oh dear, Spurs have the chance to build an attack down the right but Simons, under no pressure whatsoever, passes the ball out of play.

The Dutchman is then shown a yellow card for a rake down Van Dijk’s ankle. It’s a really poor tackle.

Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:58 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Kolo Muani should have done better with that effort. In a game of few chances that was a big one.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

17:57 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

27 min: CHANCE! Spence gets up early to set up Kolo Muani in the box but the Frenchman heads the ball straight at Alisson.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

17:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

25 min: Spurs fans getting onto Vicario after he boots the ball out of play. In fairness to the keeper he was under pressure from Szoboszlai and there wasn’t really many other options.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

17:52 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

23 min: No goals yet but it was 0-0 at this stage of the corresponding fixture last season and then we had a total of NINE goals...

Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Spence unlucky to be penalised for a foul there.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

17:49 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

19 min: Spence does really well to hold his frustration and avoid a yellow card after he is penalised for a foul on Bradley just as the pair were entering the box.

Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:47 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Been a couple of occasions now where Kudus could have been quicker to get the ball out of his feet.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

17:47 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

16 min: Spurs with a chance to break but Kudus leaves the ball behind. Home side retain possession, Muani chests the ball down to Bentancur who can’t control his volley.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

17:43 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

13 min: CHANCE! Szoboszlai picks out Van Dijk from the resulting free-kick but the Liverpool captain heads his effort straight at Vicario. Either side and it’s a goal.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

17:42 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

12 min: Nervy moment for Spurs as Kerkez is in acres of space at the back post, but his delivery into the box is poor. The pressure will remain though as Kudus concedes a free-kick.

Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:39 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tottenham have started brightly here. They are trying to feed the ball into Xavi Simons at every opportunity. The Dutchman's touch has let him down, but he is finding space.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

17:39 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

8 min: Not quite the fast opening start that perhaps we were expecting for this fixture. Both sides just feeling each other out just as Ekitike goes down in the box following a coming together with Romero.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

17:36 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

5 min: Bit of a mess from Liverpool defensively as they fail to deal with a cross into the box, though Bradley does make a fine block to divert Kolo Muani’s effort away from goal.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

17:34 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

3 min: Ekitike goes down after being fended off by Spence. The Reds forward was caught in the face by the Spurs defender and there is now a delay in the play while the Frenchman receives treatment.

Spurs stars must take responsibility

17:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

The problems at Tottenham run deeper than Thomas Frank, writes Sam Tabuteau.

Frank is under increasing pressure and Saturday’s dreadful 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest raised more questions about his future.

But there are also others at Spurs who need to take a good look at themselves in the mirror.

For all the criticism of Frank’s approach, there are bigger issues as a result of the way the club had been run for more than two decades before the Lewis family took control.

Liverpool in London this season

16:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Liverpool's struggles this season are well documented, well off the pace in the Premier League title race and out of the Carabao Cup before the semi-final stage.

Off the Reds' six league defeats, three have come in the captial against Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Brentford - all of which on a Saturday too. Is this a good omen for Tottenham?

It should be pointed out that Liverpool did win on their last visit to London, beating West Ham 2-0 just under three weeks ago.

How David Raya experience can help Guglielmo Vicario improve

16:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Thomas Frank hopes he can draw on his experience working with David Raya as he looks to help Guglielmo Vicario overcome his mistake-ridden performance against Nottingham Forest.

Vicario was twice at fault as Spurs fell to a 3-0 defeat away to Forest last weekend - playing Archie Gray into trouble on the edge of his own area before misjudging a pass from Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The Italian last month gifted Harry Wilson a goal during Spurs’ 2-1 loss to Fulham, and despite coming to his side’s rescue on a number of occasions this season, questions have been raised about whether Vicario, who signed from Empoli in 2023, is the long-term answer in goal.

Frank makes Johnson admission

16:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Thomas Frank has said he would understand if Brennan Johnson had thought about leaving Tottenham in January.

Johnson, who scored the winning goal in last season’s Europa League final, has struggled for game time since Frank arrived at the club in June.

It is understood that Spurs are willing to listen to offers for the winger in January.

Frank wants to keep Johnson at the club beyond January, but he acknowledged that it would be unrealistic to assume that any player in his position would not be assessing his options.

Salah apology

16:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mohamed Salah personally apologised to his Liverpool team-mates after lashing out at the club in a bombshell interview, Curtis Jones has revealed.

After starting a third consecutive match on the bench as Liverpool drew 3-3 with Leeds earlier this month, Salah told the press that he felt the club had thrown him under the bus for recent results, adding that his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had crumbled and suggesting he could leave the club in January.

He was subsequently dropped for the Reds’ trip to face Inter Milan in the Champions League before being reinstated for that weekend’s Premier League clash with Brighton.

He came off the bench in that match, assisting Hugo Ekitike as Liverpool won 2-0.

Jones has now revealed that Salah took it upon himself to apologise for inviting such heavy media scrutiny around the club.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Thomas Frank said he was looking forward to naming Solanke in a matchday squad, and added that he was progressing towards a return to action.

“Everyone is doing fine. Last game, I think it's the same players available,” Frank said.

“No one new is available

Predicted Liverpool XI

15:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

If Dominik Szoboszlai successfully passes a late fitness test then Arne Slot could be tempted to stick with the same front four that started the win over Brighton, meaning Hugo Ekitike gets the nod over Alexander Isak.

Florian Wirtz is expected to continue on the left with Cody Gakpo still out injured. Mohamed Salah is unavailable having joined up with Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Slot will be forced into one change at the back as Joe Gomez has been ruled out with a muscular injury he sustained against the Seagulls last weekend.

Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Jones; Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Wirtz; Ekitike.

Predicted Tottenham XI

15:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

There could be a change in midfield for Tottenham this evening, with Thomas Frank potentially opting to bring Joao Palhinha in ahead of Archie Gray, who was at fault for Nottingham Forest’s opening goal last weekend.

However, the front four could be unchanged with Xavi Simons trusted to start a big game for once.

Predicted Tottenham XI: Vicario; Pedro Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Spence; Palhinha, Bentancur; Kudus, Xavi, Kolo Muani; Richarlison

Frank has chance to flip Spurs narrative again in huge Liverpool test

15:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Warped expectations have prevented Tottenham from facing up to the reality of their situation.

This is a club in a deep malaise, one that predates Thomas Frank, and one that will take time to fix - as per the Dane’s assertions.

Micky van de Ven, speaking to the Overlap this week, was never going to downplay Tottenham’s aspirations for the season, but in harbouring dreams of Champions League qualification, he touched on a crucial point of contention.

The expectation for Tottenham each year is to qualify for the Champions League, yet not since the 2021/22 season have they finished inside the top four. That is four seasons and four managers ago, counting Ryan Mason’s brief stint.
