Georginio Rutter struck a late equaliser as Tottenham drew with Brighton, missing the chance to escape the relegation zone. Pedro Porro opened the scoring in the first-half but his strike was cancelled out before the break by a superb volley from Kaoru Mitoma. A nervy second half seemed to have been settled, though, as Xavi Simons curled a superb effort beyond Verbruggen, and Spurs saw out the lead to claim three points at home for just the third time this season.
Rutter then lashed one beyond Antonin Kinsky to restore parity late in added time, bringing an eerie silence down on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It brings to an end an impressive winning run for Brighton, who had won five of their previous six matches.
A win would have been enough to lift Spurs out of the relegation zone at least until West Ham visit Crystal Palace on Monday night, but they will remain in the bottom three for the time being. Follow the action LIVE below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, with expert insight and analysis from Sam Tabuteau at the ground.

Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
19:10 , Arthur FerridgeWow, wow, wow. Simons has always threatened to deliver a moment of that quality, of that magnitude in Spurs' battle to beat the drop but just has not been given the opportunity until now. Pandemonium here.

Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
19:03 , Arthur Ferridge72mins: A smart block from Kinsky stops Hinshelwood’s deftly weighted through-ball for Welbeck. Essential intervention.
Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:59 , Arthur Ferridge69mins: Van Hecke does well to keep up with Simons and block his shot, but the rebound falls for Joao Palhinha. Verbruggen produces a great reaction save to deny the Portuguese’s deflected shot.

Tottenham 1-1 Brighton

Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:57 , Arthur Ferridge66mins: Mitoma runs into Danso on the edge of the box and wins a free-kick, sort of dubiously. And Danso is blocked. Curious decision-making from Atwell as Brighton get a free-kick in prime position.
Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:55 , Arthur Ferridge63mins: Remarkable Van Hecke hasn’t been booked yet. Think he’s had a talking to from Atwell twice, maybe three times? He’s just clattered Solanke from behind and got off scot-free again!
Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:52 , Arthur Ferridge61mins: Bentancur has had a really impressive afternoon considering how long he’s been laid off. Great showing.
Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:49 , Arthur Ferridge58mins: Gallagher heaps pressure on Verbruggen and very nearly catches the Brighton ‘keeper out. He blocks his clearance behind for a goal kick, but that deflection could have gone anywhere.
Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:48 , Arthur Ferridge57mins: Bissouma and Kolo Muani make way for Gray and Tel.
Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:46 , Arthur Ferridge55mins: Seems as though Mathys Tel and Archie Gray will be the first Spurs players to come off the bench here, most likely to replace Rodrigo Bentancur and Randal Kolo Muani. That is TBC, though.
Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
18:45 , Arthur FerridgeThat has been coming for De Zerbi, he has been pacing his technical area all game, so no surprises to see him cautioned. You can't fault the Italians energy, he is living every moment right now.
Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:44 , Arthur Ferridge53mins: Roberto De Zerbi has been booked for repeatedly leaving the technical area.
Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:42 , Arthur FerridgeMitoma is tripped by Bentancur and falls on the ball, but he is penalised for a handball after Stuart Atwell decided against awarding a foul for the initial incident.
Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:41 , Arthur Ferridge49mins: Brighton piling the pressure on now. Ayari and Mitoma both see shots blocked, and the Seagulls have a corner.
Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:39 , Arthur Ferridge48mins: Kolo Muani seems to trip over his feet as he looks to get on the end of Simons’ cross.
Minteh then dispossesses Udogie in the final third and puts a cross in for Welbeck, but Danso is at full stretch to poke the ball away from danger.
Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:38 , Arthur Ferridge47mins: Van Hecke gets his head to Gross’ crossed free-kick but can’t get his effort on target.
2ND HALF: Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:36 , Arthur FerridgeWe’re back underway! All to play for here in N17.
Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
18:23 , Arthur FerridgeHalf-time and it is fair to say it is a bit more subdued in here than it was a few minutes ago. Will Spurs rue not making the most of the chances they created right after Porro's opener?
HALF-TIME: Tottenham 1-1 Brighton
18:21 , Arthur FerridgeAnd we head in level at the break. Porro’s opener cancelled out by Mitoma’s stunner. A gripping half of football!
Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
18:20 , Arthur FerridgeWell you can put a pin in that atmosphere now as Mitoma crashes one into the roof of the net. Superb strike and just like that we are level.
GOAL! Tottenham 1-1 Brighton | Mitoma '45+3
18:18 , Arthur FerridgeMitoma silences north London with a STUNNING volley! What a goal that is! A pinpoint cross from Gross finds him at the back post and the Japan international hits it home first-time. Kinsky, helpless.
Tottenham 1-0 Brighton
18:16 , Arthur Ferridge45mins: We’ll have five minutes added on here.
Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
18:15 , Arthur FerridgeThe noise here is incredible, Tottenham have the lead and all the momentum heading into half-time. What a turnaround and what an excellent few minutes it has been for Xavi Simons. The Dutchman has exploded into this game and left his mark.
Tottenham 1-0 Brighton
18:14 , Arthur Ferridge44mins: It is all Tottenham now. You’d be surprised not to see them score another before the break.
Tottenham 1-0 Brighton
18:12 , Arthur Ferridge41mins: It really should be two! Porro fires his rebound over after Verbruggen tips a shot onto the post.
Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
18:11 , Arthur FerridgeTottenham have the breakthrough and how big could that be. It is Pedro Porro with the header after a delightful cross from Xavi Simons. That is what the Dutchman can give you when he starts. De Zerbi has looked agitated all game but he explodes with excitement as his side take a priceless lead.
GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Brighton | Porro '39
18:09 , Arthur FerridgeTottenham lead! Superb goal. Simons lofts a lovely ball into the box and Porro nods it beyond Verbruggen.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
18:09 , Arthur Ferridge38mins: Simons and Wieffer come together again, this time the Spurs man is the offender.
Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
18:08 , Arthur FerridgeLoudest cheer of the afternoon as Wieffer finally picks up a yellow card. It has been a feisty battle between him and Simons so far.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
18:07 , Arthur Ferridge37mins: Wieffer is booked for a barge on Simons. Seems a harsh one, to be honest. Very little contact in it.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
18:06 , Arthur Ferridge36mins: Van de Ven barges Wieffer to the ground in the box, but Stuart Atwell says it was shoulder-to-shoulder. The Dutchman was really toeing the line with that tackle...
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
18:05 , Arthur Ferridge35mins: Kinsky does well to deny Welbeck’s close-range header, but that was dreadful defending from Spurs. The England striker got free much too easily.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
18:04 , Arthur Ferridge34mins: Bissouma is booked for tripping Ayari. Hard to say if it was intentional or not, but a foul all the same.
Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
18:04 , Arthur FerridgeThe offside would potentially have denied Brighton anyway if that went to VAR, but how on Earth has that not gone in? Spurs are living dangerously right now.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
18:03 , Arthur Ferridge31mins: How on Earth has that stayed out! Hinshelwood’s cross cannons off the post after Van de Ven’s awkward clearance. A rare stroke of luck!
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
18:02 , Arthur Ferridge30mins: Bissouma slides in to block Wieffer’s cross and appears to have hurt his wrist in doing so, but, being the soldier that he is, he staggers back to his feet and tracks back to defend the corner.
He needn’t have, though, as Minteh’s delivery is poor and fails to beat the first man.
Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
18:01 , Arthur FerridgeBrighton have looked a lot more threatening since Mitoma replaced Gomez. They are seeing more of the ball and working some nice openings. Spurs, by contrast, have become more ragged with the ball at their feet.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
18:01 , Arthur Ferridge31mins: Another dangerous cross from Minteh is cut out, this time by Porro. This is a great spell from Brighton.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:58 , Arthur Ferridge28mins: Brighton are growing into this. Minteh dances into the box but is dispossessed by Bentancur.
Spurs race forward and Gallagher is on the ball in the box. He cuts this way and that but can only win a corner.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:57 , Arthur Ferridge27mins: Danso does well to beat Welbeck to Wieffer’s cross.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:56 , Arthur Ferridge26mins: Gross drops an awkward corner on Kinsky’s back post, but the Czech stopper does well to punch it away.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:56 , Arthur Ferridge26mins: Van Hecke leaps like a salmon to meet a long ball forward but completely misses to allow Simons in behind. He is dispossessed, but Hurzeler must be asking questions of Van Hecke. That’s the second time he’s done that today.
Lest we forget he scored an own goal when these two sides last met.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:55 , Arthur Ferridge25mins: Solanke looks to be through on goal but turns back with a chuckle and a thumbs-up as he is deemed offside.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:53 , Arthur Ferridge23mins: Brighton have a first corner of the day, which Minteh whips over the heads of all of his team-mates in the box.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:53 , Arthur Ferridge22mins: Worth noting that Fabian Hurzeler is serving a touchline ban today and is instead watching this match from the executive box.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:52 , Arthur Ferridge21mins: We get back underway with a Tottenham corner, which falls for Simons to shoot wide from the edge of the box via a deflection.
The follow-up corner is rifled well over the bar by Kolo Muani.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:51 , Arthur Ferridge20mins: Gomez hobbles off with help from the trainers and does not look any kind of comfortable in doing so. Mitoma comes on in his place.
Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
17:49 , Arthur FerridgeWe have not seen much from Xavi Simons so far. Tottenham have been bright, with Udogie causing a fair bit of danger down the left, but Simons is yet to really get on the ball and make something happen. It is tense in here, with neither side particularly pulling any punches and plenty of stoppages as well.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:49 , Arthur Ferridge18mins: Doesn’t look great for Gomez, here, who appears to be in tears as the trainers trot out to attend to his injury. Just seemed to land awkwardly after an aerial duel there, and Kaoru Mitoma has been sent to warm up.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:48 , Arthur Ferridge17mins: Simons lofts one forward for Solanke to chase, but he overcooks it a bit and Verbruggen gets there first.
Spurs have not been perfect here, but this has been a markedly positive start as Van Hecke concedes a second corner of the day.
Gomez is down injured, though, and we may have a brief stoppage.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:45 , Arthur Ferridge15mins: Udogie’s early cross is deflected onto the head of Kadioglu and Kolo Muani very nearly gets there to sweep up, but has to let the ball run beyond him.
Spurs win a corner which Simons swings in, but the play is blown dead as Kolo Muani throws Wieffer to the ground in the melee.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:42 , Arthur Ferridge11mins: Bissouma catches Kadioglu, now. Another foul. Quite a bitty start to the match here with all the stoppages.
Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
17:41 , Arthur FerridgeIt is clumsy from Minteh, who allows Udogie to get goalside. More of a coming together than a foul, but Minteh is lucky as Udogie had done him all ends up there.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:41 , Arthur Ferridge10mins: VAR check the incident and clear! Insufficient contact.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:40 , Arthur Ferridge10mins: Minteh trips Udogie in the box and Spurs are adamant they deserve a penalty, but Atwell waves it away! It looked stonewall at first glance - will VAR have a say?
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:39 , Arthur Ferridge8mins: So too has Mats Wieffer, who has just clattered Udogie to give Spurs a free-kick on the left flank, just inside the Brighton half.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:37 , Arthur Ferridge7mins: Brighton’s Gomez has already been penalised for a couple of clumsy fouls.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:35 , Arthur Ferridge4mins: Van Hecke makes a hash of an aerial duel with Solanke and lets a long ball roll beyond him into no man’s land. Verbruggen races out of his box to clear away from the onrushing Simons.
Udogie then puts a low cross into the box for Boscagli to clear. Good start from Spurs, this. Can they make it count?
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:34 , Arthur Ferridge4mins: Porro is remonstrating with Stuart Atwell after he denied Spurs the opportunity to take a free-kick quickly.
Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
17:32 , Arthur FerridgeDespite the changes, it is still a 4-2-3-1 from De Zerbi, with Simons on the left and Gallagher as the 10. You feel both players will be comfortable interchanging positions. Having Gallagher leading the press should also help Tottenham stamp their authority on the game.
Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:32 , Arthur Ferridge2mins: A spirited press from the hosts early on, but Brighton play around it with composure.
KICK-OFF! Tottenham 0-0 Brighton
17:30 , Arthur FerridgeHere we go! We are underway at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Here come the players...
17:26 , Arthur FerridgeThe squads have taken to the pitch. Kick-off is imminent!
Sam Tabuteau at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
17:25 , Arthur FerridgeTottenham Hotspur flags have worked with the club to give every home fan a flag. The Stadium is a sea of white right now as the players get ready to come out. It is hard to overstate how big this game is for Spurs.
Team news reminder
17:20 , Arthur FerridgeWith ten minutes to kickoff, here’s a reminder of today’s starting line-ups.
Tottenham XI: Kinsky; Porro, Van de Ven, Danso, Udogie, Bentancur, Gallagher, Bissouma, Xavi, Solanke, Kolo Muani
Brighton XI: Verbruggen, Van Hecke, Minteh, Hinshelwood, Welbeck, Boscagli, Kadioglu, Gomez, Ayari, Wieffer, Gross
Welbeck on form
17:14 , Arthur FerridgeDanny Welbeck starts for Brighton today, and he seems an outside contender to serve as Harry Kane’s understudy in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad this summer.
He has 12 goals in 31 Premier League appearances this season, three of which have come in his last six appearances.
De Zerbi on Maddison's return
17:10 , Arthur Ferridge“James is one of the leaders, one of the most important players in the squad. He can give us energy, quality, because when he will be available to play, his quality is amazing. In this moment we need everyone. We need all players focused on Tottenham, especially one player as important as James.”
Spurs' new captain
17:06 , Arthur FerridgeNo great surprise that it is Micky van de Ven wearing the captain’s armband this afternoon, with Cristian Romero out for the season.
Spurs have not fared well with the Dutchman leading them out this season, though.
He defaulted as captain during Romero’s four-match suspension earlier this campaign and oversaw defeats by Newcastle, Arsenal, Fulham and Crystal Palace, conceding 11 goals in the process.
And De Zerbi doesn’t seem terribly confident in him, either.
He said on Friday: “I would like all players to be a captain, especially in this moment, it's not important if you play in the first eleven, if you play 30 minutes or 90 minutes or you can't play, we have to feel the responsibility of this situation.
“And we can't cry, otherwise we have to push and be stronger to come out of this situation because we are able to do that.”
Twists at both ends of the table
17:03 , Arthur FerridgeA win for Leeds and a goalless draw in the west London derby will spice things up in both the relegation scrap and the race to qualify for Europe.
Here are all the day’s results so far, with Tottenham vs Brighton and Chelsea vs Man Utd to follow in the evening’s action.
Brentford 0-0 Fulham
Leeds 3-0 Wolves
Newcastle 1-2 Bournemouth
What's on the line today?
16:57 , Arthur FerridgeWe all know what is at stake for Spurs here. They need a win if they are to escape the relegation zone this weekend, though they also need West Ham to either lose or draw with Crystal Palace on Monday night to keep their heads above water.
For Brighton, a win could send them as high as sixth in the table, pending various results elsewhere.
De Zerbi faces former club
16:49 , Arthur FerridgeThis is Roberto De Zerbi’s second match as Spurs boss and he is already coming up against his former club.
He managed the side from 2022 to 2024, winning 38 of his 89 matches at the helm.
This will be his first time playing against the Seagulls, though.
Hello again, Rodrigo Bentancur
16:41 , Arthur FerridgeMaddison is making an impressive comeback tonight after nearly a year on the sidelines, but so too is midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.
He last appeared for Tottenham in a 3-2 loss to Bournemouth on January 7 - 101 days ago.
James Maddison's comeback
16:33 , Arthur FerridgeJames Maddison could make his first competitive appearance since last season’s Europa League semi-finals today.
He played 64 minutes in a 3-1 defeat of Bodo/Glimt.
That match was some 352 days ago.
Sam Tabuteau at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
16:25 , Arthur FerridgeWell, that is not quite what we expected from Roberto De Zerbi. Bentancur, Simons and Bissouma all come into the starting lineup.
Maddison, meanwhile, makes the bench. It would be some story if he came off the bench to contribute to a Spurs victory. Huge evening in store.

Tottenham predicted XI
15:46 , Arthur FerridgePredicted Tottenham XI: Kinsky; Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Udogie; Gray, Bissouma, Gallagher; Kolo Muani, Tel; Solanke

Standard Sport prediction
15:36 , Arthur FerridgeWhile Spurs had flashes of threat against Sunderland, they did not look like scoring at any point and came away with another dismal defeat, their seventh in eight league matches.
While De Zerbi has now had another week on the training pitch to get his side on song, he has a huge task at hand to right this severely listing ship.
Coming up against the club he once managed, the Italian will be desperate for three points, but it remains to be seen whether five days of training will be enough to turn this abject Spurs side around.
With Brighton very much on form, we expect another tough afternoon for Spurs.
Brighton to win, 2-0.
Brighton early team news
15:26 , Arthur FerridgeBrighton cannot call upon Stefanos Tzimas or Adam Webster due to knee ligament injuries, with both set to miss the end of the season.
Lewis Dunk is suspended for this match, while James Milner will play no part through injury.
