Tottenham told exactly what they're getting as Sporting boss confirms Pedro Porro transfer

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed Pedro Porro is now Antonio Conte's "son" ahead of his transfer to Tottenham.

Porro, 23, has arrived in London to complete a medical ahead of a deadline day move to Spurs. Conte and his recruitment team have been chasing the Spain international's signature all January and their persistence is set to pay off late in the window.

Assuming there are no problems with his medical, Porro will join Tottenham on loan until the end of the season. The deal includes an obligation to buy the wing-back for €45million (around £40m) in the summer, effectively making it a permanent January switch.

Porro's transfer to Tottenham has left fans excited. The former Manchester City defender, who never featured under Pep Guardiola, impressed against Spurs in this season's Champions League and helped Sporting win the Primeira Liga title two seasons ago.

Spurs fans are eager to see what Porro can do in their white shirt and Sporting boss Amorim gave them a preview during a press conference on Tuesday. The disappointed manager told reporters: "Our relationship is very close, he will be missed.

"In football we get used to change from a very young age. One day they are our children, our best friends, and now he is Conte's son.

"If we play against him, I already know his difficulties. We remain friends, I move on, now my favourites are others. My players are always the best in the world. Porro will be a player for another team and I wish them the best of luck.

"A player with Porro's characteristics cannot be arranged, and that's why they beat his clause. Looking at a player who is a right back and has so many goals and assists, we have to try to build another one, that's what we're going to do."

Tottenham have been crying out for a right-back for a number of seasons. Matt Doherty, 31, has struggled to impress since his move from Wolves in the summer of 2020 and will spend the rest of this season out on loan at Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

Unlike Porro's move, Atletico do not have an obligation or even an option to buy Doherty at the end of the loan spell. Fellow full-back Djed Spence, 22, is in a similar situation after completing a temporary switch to Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais on deadline day.

Due to the departures of Doherty and Spence, Porro will compete with Emerson Royal for a starting role in Conte's 3-4-3 system. The Brazil international, 24, has failed to make the right-wing-back position his own since arriving from Barcelona in the summer of 2021.

Tottenham are looking to salvage their season after a tricky few months. Conte's side are fifth in the Premier League - three points behind Manchester United in fourth having played a game more. They are still in the Champions League and FA Cup.
