Tottenham set to smash WSL transfer record to sign Beth England from Chelsea

Chelsea striker Beth England is set to move to Tottenham in a British transfer record for a female player.

England, 28, will make the switch across London in a move worth £250,000 which would be a record for a deal between two Women's Super League clubs, according to the Daily Mail.

England has struggled for game time at Chelsea this season and said goodbye to her Chelsea team-mates before Christmas following the win over PSG in the Champions League. The deal will surpass the previous WSL transfer record of £200,000. That also involved Chelsea, when Lauren James signed for the Blues from Manchester United.

England, who previously played for Doncaster Rovers Belles before moving to the Blues ends a six-year spell at the WSL champions where she scored 70 goals in 148 appearances in all competitions. She was included in the Lionesses squad which won Euro 2022 but failed to get on the pitch.

Her arrival will be a major boost to Rehanne Skinner's Tottenham who have struggled to score goals this season. Spurs have found the net 11 times in their nine games to date, but eight of those came when they thrashed Brighton back in October.

England did start Chelsea's final WSL match of 2022 against Reading, her second start of the season, but has struggled for minutes in general throughout the campaign. She was substituted at half-time during that game without scoring, Chelsea eventually winning 3-2.

But she did make what looks likely to be her final appearance for the club, at Stamford Bridge, coming off the bench to replace Sam Kerr in the 73rd minutes of the 3-0 win over PSG last week. When the WSL returns in 2023 she will tasked with scoring the goals to help move Tottenham up the table.

Spurs have endured a tough first-half of the season and currently sit eighth in the table with nine points. They produced a miserable performance in their final game of the year, losing 3-0 at home to Everton with forward Ashleigh Neville sent off.

With Neville now suspended for three games, England will be under to pressure to hit the ground running and help ease Tottenham's goalscoring problems. She will also hope the move reignites her international career.

England was left out of Sarina Wiegman's last two England squads, missing both the win over USA at Wembley and the double-header in Spain against Japan and Norway. She last scored for the national side in September's 10-0 win over Luxembourg, bagging a brace for her 10th and 11th goals for England at senior level.
