Tottenham send Richarlison message of support after Brazilian has banana thrown at him on international duty

Tottenham have sent a message of support to Richarlison after the forward had a banana thrown at him while playing for Brazil.

It happened after he scored his side’s second goal in a 5-1 win over Tunisia, taking place at the Parc des Princes in Paris, as Richarlison celebrated by the corner flag with his team-mates.

The banana landed in front of the group of Brazilian players, with several other objects also thrown from the stands.

Ahead of the match, the Brazil team had posed with an anti-racism banner. It read: ‘Without our black players, we wouldn’t have stars on our shirts.”

Richarlison has called on football’s governing bodies to take firm and swift action against those responsible for the racist attack, with Thiago Silva among the players offering their support to the 25-year-old. Tottenham have now done likewise.

“We are disgusted by the racist abuse of Richarlison at last night’s game between Brazil and Tunisia,” the club tweeted.

“This has no place in football, or anywhere. We stand with you, Richy.”

In a post on social media following the incident, Richarlison insisted racist abuse will continue to be prevalent unless those in charge of the game respond with sufficiently tough punishments for the perpetrators.

He tweeted: “As long as [the authorities] stay ‘blah blah blah’ and don’t punish [the racists], it will continue like this, happening every day and everywhere. No time, bro!”
