Tottenham secure £31m windfall to prove Daniel Levy right over Antonio Conte decision

One noticeable aspect of Tottenham's financial results for the year ending June 2022 was the decrease in UEFA prize money brought in compared to the previous 12 months. Earning £23.6million in 2021 after participating in the Europa League, that figure dropped to £10.2m in 2021/22.

Competing in the newly-formed Europa Conference League as opposed to the UEFA's second European club competition, a Covid-enforced group stage exit also had a big impact on the club's earnings as they were not involved in the knockout phase of the competition. One thing for certain is that Tottenham will see a huge increase in UEFA prize money when they confirm their financial results for the year ending June 2023.

The return of Champions League football, which was made possible by Daniel Levy appointing Antonio Conte as Tottenham head coach, will see that £10.2m drastically climb, with Tottenham already surpassing that figure after just qualifying for the group stage following a late rally in the 2021/22 campaign saw them pip Arsenal to a top-four finish. The 32 clubs who qualified for the 2022/23 Champions League group stage will all receive €15.6million (£13.8m) just for making it to the group phase.

That fee is then topped up by how exactly they fared in the group stage as the performance bonuses are €2.8m (£2.4m) for a win and €930,000 (£822,000) for a draw. As Tottenham won three and drew two of their six Champions League fixtures, their group stage fee of £13.8m will be boosted by a further £8.8m to bring about a total of £22.6m.

Clubs who reach the Round of 16 earn an additional €9.6m (£8.4m), with Tottenham bringing in that amount after setting up a two-legged tie against AC Milan after topping Group D following their stoppage-time win over Marseille in the final group game. That means Tottenham have so far earnt £31m regardless of whether they exit the Round of 16 at the hands of the Rossoneri.

If indeed Tottenham do get the better of AC Milan and progress to the final eight of the Champions League, quarter-finalists make €10.6m (£9.3m), semi-finalists will get a further €12.5m (£11m), finalists €15.5m (£13.7m) and the winners will receive an extra €4.5m (£3.9m).

As a result, the 2022/23 Champions League winners will receive €68.3m (£60.1m) in total, with that number then boosted by how many wins and draws they recorded in the group phase. Tottenham would stand to earn £68.9m in prize money, before coefficient shares and market pool funds come into play, if they go all the way and lift the famous trophy in Istanbul on Saturday, June 10, 2023.
