Tottenham's Kim Min-jae transfer interest explained ahead of Son Heung-min World Cup opener

Tottenham supporters will have a close eye on proceedings at the World Cup on Thursday. No fewer than three Spurs players will be in action, with two of them taking to the field against one another.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Son Heung-min will face off against each other in Group H as Uruguay take on South Korea in their opening World Cup clash in Qatar. Spurs fans will have a keen eye on Son after he suffered a fracture in his face before the Premier League went on break for the Qatar tournament.

But there are sure to be players in action of transfer interest too. One of those is Son's international teammate Kim min-Jae.

Tottenham have long been linked with bolstering their defensive options and Kim Min-jae has been one who has been heavily linked in the past couple of transfer windows. The centre-back joined Fenerbahce from Beijing Guoan in the summer of 2021, but had been mentioned as a Spurs target in the January 2021 transfer window.

Back then Spurs had been tracking him for a year, but did not end up making a move and he went on to move to Turkey in the next transfer window instead.

After a year at Fenerbahce, Kim was once again back under scrutiny for a potential move. And once again Spurs were one of the teams in the frame. Spurs had continued to keep an eye on his progress. He continued to be a player of some interest to Tottenham, but was not high up their list of potential centre-back signings.

Kim went on to sign for Napoli in Serie A and he has started all but one of their league and Champions League games, helping them to the top of the Serie A table, scoring two goals, and qualifying for the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

Now, with the January transfer window coming round, Spurs are once more being linked with a move for the South Korean centre-back. Reports have suggested that Spurs are willing to pay the £43million release clause to sign him.

There are differing reports too, from Football-Italia that Napoli are trying to fend off interest by offering the 26-year-old a lucrative new contract, that will eradicate that release clause.

It remains to be seen what Spurs will do, but he is clearly a player of interest and now might be the time to pull the trigger on a transfer offer.
