Tottenham suffered their first defeat of the season as Sporting twice scored late to beat them in Lisbon.
This was a game of few chances, with both sides struggling to break each other down and carve out clear-cut chances.
Marcus Edwards was bright for Sporting and almost scored a wonder goal before half-time, while Richarlison had the ball in the net but he was ruled offside.
In the end, Sporting won in it the final minute of normal time with Paulinho heading home from a corner before Arthur Gomes sealed the win in injury
Simon Collings was in Lisbon to see Tottenham in action...
Hugo Lloris 6
Made a couple of good saves in the first half and was solid all night. Turned up late on to make a stunning save and keep out Pedro Porro’s shot. Could do little about either goal.
Cristian Romero 6
A good 90 minutes from the centre-back, who has recovered from the injury that disrupted him in August. Looked solid, but will be upset with the two late goals.
Eric Dier 6
Had a fairly steady night on his return to Sporting, but was kept busy by Marcus Edwards. Struggled at time to handle his pace.
Ben Davies 6
Picked to start ahead of Clement Lenglet and had a solid game. Kept things simple and linked up well with Perisic at times.
Emerson Royal 5
Another frustrating night for the right-back. Had two good chances come his way just after the break, but couldn’t convert, and then got nutmegged in injury time for the second goal.
Rodrigo Bentancur 5
Had the odd nice moment in possession but was fairly quiet overall. Probably enjoyed more of the ball than he thought he would away from home, and didn’t do enough with it.
Pierre-Emile Højbjerg 5
Broke up play, as he usually does, and kept things ticking over in possession, but uninspired on the whole.
Ivan Perisic 7
Had some classy moments and looks very much like a player of Champions League quality. Kane so nearly scored off his drilled cross late on.
Richarlison 6
Was the pick of Tottenham’s forwards on the night and looked the most lively of them. Had a goal ruled out in the first half for offside.
Harry Kane 5
Like Son he had a difficult night. Touch was a little off at times, mainly in the first half, but he did get a bit better after the break. So close to scoring off Perisic’s cross.
Son Heung-min 5
Another frustrating night for the forward and his search for a first goal of the season goes on. Never truly got into the game and had few chances come his way.
Substitutions
Dejan Kulusevski (Son 72’) 6
Off the bench for the final 20 minutes or so and looked bright. Will hope to start this weekend.
