Tottenham 'open transfer talks' with Arsenal target as Pau Torres requirement emerges

Antonio Conte has some work to do in the January transfer market if Totteham hope to secure Champions League football next year.

The Italian manager has openly declared that he wants to bring in players this month, with a host of names being linked to the club.

Spurs are just two points behind north London rivals Arsenal and the coveted fourth-place spot, crucially holding two games in hand.

The two sides will battle for the final Champions League berth along with Manchester United and West Ham after the north London derby was postponed this past weekend.

There's a lot of talk about outgoing pieces of business this month, with Spurs being heavily linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Adama Traore - a deal which the club hope to complete this week - numerous outlets have reported.

One player who has been linked with a host of European sides - including Arsenal and Liverpool - AC Milan's Franck Kessie, has reportedly held talks with Tottenham.

That's according to journalist Pete O'Rourke, who claims that the players representatives have spoken with club representatives.

Kessie has quickly become one of the most highly-rated defensive midfielders in world football having impressed in Italy.

He could be seen as a replacement for Tanguy Ndombele, who finds himself separated from the squad during training sessions.

Elsewhere, transfer journalist and insider Fabrizio Romano has stated that Spurs are interested in Villarreal defender Pau Torres.

The dominant centre-back was subject of interest from the club last summer, but chose to remain in Spain.

Romano said: "Let’s see what happens with a centre-back. Tottenham want to sign a new centre-back in January. Pau Torres has always been on their list since last summer, but Villarreal have no intention to let him leave in January."

Torres is likely to look for a Champions League side this summer, so a move could hinge on Spurs finishing in the top four this season.

Finally, transfer insider Dean Jones has reported that Philippe Coutinho was offered to Tottenham.

The reporter stated that Spurs were offered the opportunity to sign him this past summer, as well as this month, before Aston Villa came in.

Coutinho made his debut for Villa this past weekend, scoring and grabbing an assist against Manchester United in the 2-2 draw at Villa Park.
