Tottenham, Newcastle, Liverpool in closest Champions League fight after supercomputer prediction

It could be the closest ever battle for the final Champions League place come the end of the Premier League season. Liverpool's victory over 10-man Newcastle on Saturday evening saw the Reds close the gap to the top four to six points.

Jurgen Klopp's side do have a game in hand on the Magpies, however, which could see them reduce that gap to just three points. After a difficult first half of the season, the Reds are beginning to find some form.

The win over Newcastle came after victory in the Merseyside Derby with Everton. And their return to form spells potential bad news for Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for fourth.

It looks as though Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United are already nailed on for the top three spots, meaning only one more Champions League place looks to be up for grabs.

Newcastle are the current imcumbents, although Spurs can leapfrog them into fourth with victory over rivals West Ham United on Sunday. They would then have played a game more than Eddie Howe's men, however, and two more than Liverpool. They need to get back to winning ways after a shock 4-1 reverse at Leicester last time out.

But how will the table look at the end of the season? Data experts FiveThirtyEight, who make calculations for a number of sports, as well as political outcomes based on estimates of a team’s overall strength and goals they are expected to score and conced against different opposition, believe it could be the tightest race for fourth ever.

According to the supercomputer, all three of Newcastle, Tottenham and Liverpool will finish on the same number of points come the end of the season - 64.

Newcastle and Liverpool have been handed a 33% chance of finishing fourth - their most likely finishing position - with Spurs given a 29% chance of Champions League qualification. Crucially though, Newcastle are set to have a better goal difference than both Liverpool and Tottenham to take fourth spot. Just.
