Tottenham legend Robbie Keane named new Maccabi Tel Aviv manager in surprise move

Robbie Keane has been named the new manager of Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv as the Tottenham legend continues his career in the dugout.

Maccabi announced the deal on Monday which will see the Irishman, 42, take charge for the 2023-24 season.

“I am happy to take on this challenge at Maccabi,” said Keane.

“My team and I are already looking forward to starting work and we are confident in our ability to do what is necessary to prepare the team for the upcoming season.”

Keane most recently spent the final weeks of last season as part of Sam Allardyce’s staff in the veteran coach’s ill-fated attempt to save Leeds from Premier League relegation.

Previous stints with Middlesbrough and the Republic of Ireland national team were also as part of the backroom staff with the ex-striker having spent a short spell in charge of Indian club ATK in a player-manager role.

Keane enjoyed great success as a player with Tottenham, LA Galaxy and Coventry, among others, before retiring in 2018.

He will oversee a Maccabi side that finished third in last season’s Israeli Premier League, which put them into the qualifying rounds of the Europa Conference League.

Club owner Mitch Goldhar stated: “Robbie brings with him the mentality, character, energy and focus of a winner, qualities that he demonstrated everywhere he played. These characteristics combined with the ambitions to succeed as a coach are in line with our goals at Maccabi.”
