Tottenham confirm new shirt numbers for Oliver Skipp and Cristian Romero

Tottenham have handed new shirt numbers to Oliver Skipp and Cristian Romero ahead of the new season.

Skipp moves from no.29 to no.4, previously worn by Romero in his first season at the club, as the centre-back takes the vacant no.17.

Sissoko last wore the no.17 for Spurs but left the club, for Watford, with the 2021-22 season already underway so Romero, signed two weeks prior, was unable to take that number at the time.

The Spurs squad will later on Saturday fly out to South Korea for their pre-season tour, with a K-League XI first up on Wednesday.

The no.4 is more commonly associated with a centre-back at Spurs, with both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld previously wearing the number in recent years. Skipp becomes the first midfielder to don that particular jersey since Didier Zokora in 2008-09.

It's a case of roles reversed with the no.17 shirt, which is usually worn by a midfielder. Before Sissoko was Andros Townsend, Giovani dos Santos and Kevin Prince Boateng.

Both players are expected to be in action against the K-League XI, before friendlies against Sevilla, Rangers and Roma to see out July.
