Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are set to face off in a friendly match at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground shortly after the conclusion of the Premier League season. The game is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, May 22 at the 100,000-capacity stadium, following the final league fixtures for both teams against Sheffield United and Brentford, respectively.
This match holds special significance for Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, who previously managed A-League Men's side Melbourne Victory during the 2012-13 season. Postecoglou also boasts a successful history with South Melbourne, having secured titles both as a player and a manager in the 1990s.
Originally, Chelsea was intended to be Spurs' opponent for the friendly encounter. However, Chelsea's recent victory over Leicester City has kept them in contention for the FA Cup, potentially making them unavailable for the trip to Australia if they advance to the final at Wembley on Saturday, May 25.
Both Tottenham and Newcastle are still in the running for European qualification next season. Postecoglou's side is aiming for a coveted spot in the Champions League, while Eddie Howe's Newcastle is vying for a place in the Europa League.
