Leeds United could have fought off Barcelona’s interest in Raphinha as the Spanish club look for a ‘real alternative’ to the Brazilian - but the Whites now face pressure from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur for their talisman.
Spanish giants Barca have been heavily linked with a move for Raphinha, but their financial problems could force them to look for cheaper options - with Angel Di Maria the man under ‘serious consideration’, according to Spanish daily Sport . The 34-year-old will become a free agent when his current deal at Paris Saint-Germain ends this month and he is looking for a one-year deal in Europe before he ends his career in his home country.
This has opened the door to north London duo Arsenal and Spurs, according to the Athletic, who are both eyeing the former Rennes man to bolster their attacking firepower this summer. Raphinha scored 11 goals and racked up three assists last season - at times single-handedly turning games in Leeds’ favour - and while those in charge at Elland Road don’t want to lose their man, they understand his intentions to play in European competition.
“The Athletic reported earlier this month that Leeds are sympathetic to Raphinha’s ambition and do not intend to be unfair or obstructive if their valuation is met.” Adam Crafton wrote.
“It is understood that Leeds no longer anticipate him accepting a new contract — something that appeared to be on the cards midway through the season — and although Raphinha has not directly asked for a transfer, it is no secret that he sees himself playing in European competition.”
Raphinha admitted while away with Brazil that playing time will be a deciding factor in his decision this summer, with his dream of playing for his country at a World Cup very much on the cards later in the year. The 25-year-old is guaranteed a key role in West Yorkshire next season, should he remain at the club, and that could make the difference - Gunners fan-favourite Bukayo Saka operates in the same role as Raphinha would at Arsenal.
But the lure of Champions League football, and the opportunity to play under Antonio Conte with the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son, could prove too good to turn down for the Whites talisman. Recent business at Spurs suggests they are going all out to challenge for a title next season, with Ivan Perisic and Yves Bissouma arriving from Inter Milan and Brighton respectively - they also look set to sign Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence, who earned promotion while on loan at Nottingham Forest last season.
Leeds also face firm interest in midfielder Kalvin Phillips, namely from Manchester City. The Premier League champions see the 26-year-old as a successor to the departing Fernandinho as they look to rejuvenate the squad ahead of another title defence next year.
Both are likely to garner interest throughout the summer from across Europe, but contracts until 2024 should put Leeds in the driving seat regarding any negotiations. Should either or both be sold, then contingency plans are likely drawn up to replace them.
