Tottenham have reached a verbal agreement with Ange Postecoglou to make him their manager. Once compensation has been finalised with Celtic, where the Australian has a one-year rolling contract, the appointment will be confirmed.
Spurs and Postecoglou have settled on an a two-year deal with an option for a further season. The move for the 57-year-old accelerated after his season ended on Saturday with Celtic beating Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup final to complete a domestic treble.
Tottenham have been without a permanent manager since Antonio Conte left in late March. Cristian Stellini and then Ryan Mason oversaw the remainder of a disappointing season that ended with the club missing out on Europe after finishing eighth.
The former Barcelona and Spain manager Luis Enrique was on Spurs’ shortlist and he was waiting to ascertain the extent of their interest during talks with Napoli. Feyenoord’s Arne Slot and Julian Nagelsmann were among others considered by Tottenham. Nagelsmann is high on the list of candidates being discussed by Paris Saint-Germain as they look to replace Christophe Galtier.
Postecoglou joined Celtic from the Japan’s Yokohama F. Marinos in 2021 and won the league and League Cup in both of his two seasons as well as this season’s Scottish Cup. His coaching experience includes spells at Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory and just over four years in charge of Australia, who he led to the 2014 World Cup. He also qualified the team for the 2018 edition but he left before the tournament in Russia.
