Tottenham academy star hands Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici solution for transfer dilemma

Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici will have some goalkeeper decisions to make when the summer transfer window comes around. Earlier this year Hugo Lloris signed a new two and a half year contract at the club he has been at for almost a decade.

Pierluigi Gollini made the move to N17 last summer on loan with an option to buy - if certain criteria were met - from Atalanta. The shot stopper has made just 10 appearances this season, with Lloris inevitably being one of Conte's first names on the team sheet.

It will be a waiting game to see what Spurs decide to do with their goalkeepers when the summer window opens. Alfie Whiteman is currently back on loan with Swedish side Degerfors, whose season begins at the start of April, while Kacper Kurylowicz is on a temporary move to non-league side Potters Bar.

Currently, the third choice keeper behind Lloris and Gollini is Brandon Austin. Tottenham announced on Tuesday that the 23-year-old has signed a new contract with the club, making him at Spurs player until at least 2024.

The shot stopper hasn't made an appearance this season, but trains with the first-team squad and Conte's coaching staff. Austin has been at the club since he was a child, moving up through the academy and he explained what it feels like to sign the new contract.

"It's really good. Obviously delighted to sign here and stay here for a couple more years," he said. "[I’ve] been here since I was eight-years-old so to commit here again for the next two years is really big for me and my family. Obviously, the hard work that they've put in, I wouldn't be here without them.

"To be one of the ones that have come through right from the beginning, you've seen a lot of changes and it's just good, you feel really a part of the club and I have a real connection with the club and it's been there to support me throughout my career and I just wanted to give back to them as much as I can," Austin added.

The 23-year-old was praised by former academy coach John McDermott for his hard work in training after an FA Youth Cup win a number of years ago. Austin has impressed and got experience at a number of clubs, making appearances for the Tottenham's youngsters, Danish side Viborg FF and Orlando City in the MLS, with the latter two being loans in 2019 and 2021 respectively.

Austin is now waiting for his chance to break into Conte's side, but has explained what it has been like working with the first team. "To spend all the time now with the team is great because to make relationships and friends with the players and teammates that you used to train with before, but now to do it on everyday basis, you get to develop that even more and then just to learn from spending time with Hugo and with Pierre all the time is great," Austin admitted.

"[I] pick up so much information from them two. Two world class players who have played at the highest level."

He went on to highly praise the Lilywhites skipper and how much he has helped the Hemel Hempstead-born keeper. "Hugo’s amazing. He's always there to help me - any questions I have. We’ll talk about the game, talk about training.

"He's always there to give advice, speak about his experiences that he’s had and try to transfer that to me. Hugo’s been really important in that for me and it’s someone to learn from, someone that’s won the World Cup and all the achievements he's had is amazing and something that I try not to take for granted."

Austin has also had the chance to work with the solid coaching staff at Tottenham, including Conte's goalkeeper coach Marco Savorani. "Perry [Suckling] has been with me since I've been here at the club, a legend of the club as well. I say he’s been a massive factor on my journey, just as much as all these other coaches that I've been lucky enough to work with.

"To work with Marco now, since he's come in with the boss has been great. Another style, another way of looking at things and his attention to detail has really taken it to another level and helped me in my game."

This attention to detail which the former academy player has touched on is also something he has commended Conte for and explained how much it helps him and the rest of the Spurs squad. "The boss has been taking it to another level," Austin admitted.

"Someone proven like he is, as a winner, really trying to transfer that to the club and to us as players. I think that attention to detail and the demands that he sets on us really will set us up and I see good things happening with the squad that we have."

With Gollini's future at Spurs uncertain, Conte and Paratici will have to decide whether they want to bring someone new to N17 or whether they perhaps give someone like Austin a chance. However, with the 23-year-old's lack of first team football, it may be more beneficial for the shot stopper to go out on another loan and get regular game time, before hopefully returning a better and more experienced keeper and therefore he could be a longer-term solution.

"For me, it's just to keep working hard, impress as much as I can, take any opportunities when given. Just give to the squad and be ready when called upon."
