Toton street 'will not be the same' after beloved 'Pink Lady' dies

A Nottinghamshire street 'will not be the same' after a beloved neighbour died. Known for her pink house in Whiting Avenue in Toton and all things pink, Kathy Charles sadly passed away in her late 60s on Thursday, March 9.

The retired Players cigarette machine operator loved the colour pink so much that she not only painted her home in the bright colour, but also made sure to always wear pink. She also had her entire home decorated in her favourite colour. In addition to the colour pink, Kathy also loved animals, including her pet spiders, tortoise named Eric, canaries Kath and Sid, parrot Nelly and her beloved dog Ozzy who sadly died a short while before Kathy herself.

Neighbours of Kathy and residents in the area say they will remember her for many reasons, including her kindness, friendly nature and how she would help anyone with anything. Accountant Julio Herrera, 36, said: "We moved here in 2019 and we were a bit apprehensive at first when we saw the pink house, but then we met her and she was the best neighbour you could have."

He described Kathy as being "very bubbly and friendly" and explained: "She had a parrot that would come out and she would come and say hello. I was really really sad when I heard the news last Friday."

Speaking of Kathy, contractor consultant Joe Hopper, 39, said: "I remember putting my music on once and she texted me to say 'turn it up Joe, I want to hear more music like this'. She was always really jolly, really comforting, really fun and she would just brighten up the day.

"She was friendly and outgoing and just a lovely person really. It's just really sad news, it was a shock as I saw her literally a few days before that."

Another resident on the street, Alex King, 21, said: "She was lovely every time I spoke to her. I remember seeing her walk the dog all the time, she was just really lovely. She actually gave me the TV I have now in my room for nothing. It was shocking news, she was quite the character.

"She wore all pink clothing as well. It's really sad, and it was sudden as well."

Speaking of Kathy's colourful house, Alex added: "Directing people here, I always told them it's the road with the massive pink house you can't miss it. Even people who haven't been to the house, they know it when they see it."

Supermarket worker Tracey Broadhurst, 59, said: "She was lovely, I've known her for 30 years, she was funny, she was lovely and it will not be the same without her. We were always talking about all sorts of different things.

"She loved her dog Ozzy and nelly the parrot. She was always smiling and waving." Retired Christine Knowles, 70, described Kathy as being "a character".

She explained: "She was just so lovely and she was so kind and she loved all animals. She loved everyone, loved pink and she was always lovely. I've been here 24 years and she has been a joy. She was a remarkable lady, one in a million, she was always so kind and she was just so thoughtful."
