Tory voter ID checks slammed as just ONE person cautioned for poll fraud last year

Police issued just one caution for electoral fraud last year - triggering fresh criticism of the voter ID system which will be used at next month’s elections.

New rules for taking part in elections in England mean voters must show photographic identification when they go to their local polling station.

The Government has claimed the shake-up is needed to crackdown on electoral fraud.

But critics say having to show photo ID will make it more difficult for some voters to cast ballots.

Latest Electoral Commission figures reveal the limited extent of voter fraud in the UK.

Last May, elections for local councils took place in England, Scotland and Wales, for local and Combined Authority Mayors in England and for the Northern Ireland Assembly, along with six parliamentary by-elections.

A total of 193 cases of alleged electoral fraud were investigated by the police during 2022.

But officers issued just one caution for an offence, while court proceedings have been started over another case.

The findings come as voters in England prepare to show voter ID as they cast ballots at May 4’s local elections - the first time electors in the nation will have needed identification.

Acceptable documents include passports, driving licences and older persons’ bus passes.

People who do not have acceptable photo ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate.

The Government estimates the cost of providing ID to people who do not have any will cost taxpayers up to £230million a year.

Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner said tonight: “The Government has a crucial responsibility to make voters aware of their voter ID policies, but they are clearly failing in their duties.

“Labour are clear that voter ID is an expensive, unnecessary policy and the wrong priority at the height of a cost-of-living crisis.

“If voters don’t have the required photo ID, the easiest way to vote is by signing up for a postal vote.”

The Mirror told last month how one in four voters wrongly believes they do not need photo ID to cast a ballot in May.

Some 27% of 1,500 voters quizzed online by pollsters Redfield & Wilton Strategies disagreed with the statement: “Voters must present photo identification in order to vote.”

Nearly three in five - 59% - were aware they would need ID, and 57% approve or strongly approve of the requirement, with only 19% against.

Electoral Reform Society director of policy and research Jess Garland warned: “Voter ID is the biggest change to how we vote in a generation - one that puts free and fair elections at risk.

“Awareness of these new rules remains low and with just weeks to go until polling day far too many voters still lack the required ID.

“If the Government wants to improve elections in the UK it should be finding ways to increase engagement instead of putting up barriers and making it harder for people to cast their vote.

“The Government's insistence on driving this policy through despite the dangers risks undermining the public’s trust in our electoral process – with just weeks to go it’s time they think again.”
