When Rishi Sunak stood on the steps of Downing Street, he looked shiny and new compared to what had gone before, especially his vow to bring “integrity and accountability” as prime minister. Yet here we are three months in and, to coin a phrase, nothing has changed. It feels like we’re back in the thick of Boris Johnson’s era of bad behaviour, cover-up and watching lacklustre ministers slither round the breakfast media round humiliating themselves.
Nadim Zahawi and his tax affairs scandal could not have come at a worse time for Sunak. People are already fuming at the Government because we are all poorer and, despite paying record levels of tax, nothing in this country works. Apart from those PPE contracts, which were nice work if you could get it.
