'Tory Party is stuck in an Iron Layby clinging to divisive, bitter past'

The nostalgic obsession with Margaret Thatcher makes the Conservative Party a prisoner of the past.

The Tories have no viable future when leadership contenders Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak profess devotion to a divisive figure booted out of Downing Street in the last century.

Clinging to the Iron Lady is to mythologise a politician who was ditched as a liability just like Boris Johnson and whose policies were responsible for many of our current problems.

Thatcher did win three contests yet greed, bigotry, trade union bashing, flogging the country’s assets cheaply to fatcats and the poll tax are her cursed legacy.

Labour cannot believe their luck that the pair battling to be installed in No10 by the Conservatives without a General Election are stuck in such a divisive, bitter past.

Britain deserves real change, a fresh start.

The real virus

US President Joe Biden’s venerable age makes his positive Covid test worrying but he will receive the best medical care in the world.

Here in Britain the virus is still a concern. Millions of people are off work and the worry is another lethal mutation could rip through the population.

Few if any of us want to return to restrictions and lockdowns. What most of us desire is a Government preparing precautions and drafting contingency plans.

Alas it is the fate of Britain to be lumbered with clueless Tories fighting among themselves when we most need real leadership.
