Earlier this year, I announced that I would be stepping down as an MP, following 9 years in Parliament and 3 years as the Minister for London.
Over that time, I had the privilege of working with some of the brightest and most dedicated individuals within the Conservative Party.
However, after having stepped back from front line politics, I have had time to reflect on the future of our party and the leadership we need to navigate the turbulent political landscape ahead.
Now, as our party stands at a crossroads, we must choose a leader who not only understands the challenges we face but also has the vision and the resolve to lead us back to power.
For me, that leader is James Cleverly. His track record, breadth of experience, and ability to connect with voters make him the ideal person to unite our party and secure the future of our country.
James is one of the most capable and respected figures in our party. His leadership as Foreign Secretary proves his ability to handle high-stakes, complex global issues. As Home Secretary, he took action to cut migration.
James also understands London deeply. Having grown up in Lewisham and served as a London Assembly Member, he knows the city from the inside out.
And he knows what I’ve always believed: when London thrives, the UK thrives.
London is not just a financial and cultural capital; it is home to nine million people, each with their own hopes and struggles.
Our capital city, with all its vibrancy, innovation, and diversity, needs thoughtful, targeted policies to ensure it continues to thrive—and to ensure it works for every Londoner and the rest of the country.
London may appear prosperous from the outside, but it faces significant challenges that demand strong leadership.
Housing affordability, transport congestion, and rising crime are serious issues that impact millions of people.
James’ vision for London is one where opportunity is accessible to all, where transport networks are fit for a global city, and where housing is within reach for young people and families.
These issues are not only important to Londoners, but to the entire UK—because when London fails, the knock-on effects are felt throughout the country.
In the next general election, the Conservative Party will need a leader who can win over not just the shires, but the cities. London is a critical battleground.
We cannot afford to lose touch with the capital, or with the diverse, dynamic electorate it represents.
James has the ability to speak to all Londoners—whether they’re concerned about housing, transport, safety, or jobs.
He understands the issues that matter most to them, and he knows how to deliver solutions that work.
Ultimately, the next leader of the Conservative Party must have the experience, vision, and local knowledge to lead us to victory- both in London and across the UK- and for me that leader is James Cleverly.
