Tory leadership hopeful in humiliating Scottish spelling blunder

A TORY leadership candidate got a big boost when a Scottish Conservative MP gave her backing in the race to succeed Rishi Sunak.

Ok, not really, but Tom Tugendhat’s campaign people were rather excited to hail the support of Gordan and Buchan MP Harriet Cross on Monday morning.

That’s right: Gordan and Buchan, that proud area in the north east of Scotland, which takes its name from the Clan Gordan, who in turn take their name from the village of Gordan in Berwickshire.

It’s a pretty common name. Just think of all the famous Gordans: Gordan Ramsay, Gordan Brown, Gordan Lightfoot, Gordan Strachan, the list goes on.

No fewer than three times was the name of the constituency misspelt in the press release from Tugendhat’s office, including in a quote from the man himself: “It is great to have the support of my friend Harriet. Canvassing with her on the doorsteps, I know she will be a great champion for Gordan and Buchan and Scotland in Westminster. I am thrilled to have her support.

“Unionism is indivisible from Conservatism and I promise to always fight for the people of Scotland and the Union.”

It’s just lucky for the Tories the future of the Union isn’t riding on the outcome of a spelling test…
