Tories use sneaky tactics to try and block indyref2 statement

Stephen Kerr has launched an attempt to block Nicola Sturgeon's indyref2 statement

THE Tories are trying to use a sneaky tactic to stop Nicola Sturgeon from making a key announcement about indyref2 next week.

According to Wednesday's Parliamentary agenda, an amendment has been lodged by chief whip Stephen Kerr to amend the business programme for Tuesday, July 28.

The First Minister is due to make a statement about the "route map" to a second independence referendum, with Paisley MSP George Adam proposing it as part of business for the day.

She will reveal her plans for how the Scottish Government can move forward with a referendum whilst Westminster withholds consent for a Section 30 order.

But an amendment suggests the planned announcement should be taken out of the schedule.

The amendment reads: "As an amendment to motion S6M-05144 in the name of George Adam (Business Programme), leave out from 'followed by Ministerial Statement: Independence Referendum' to 'followed by Scottish Government Debate: Northern Ireland Protocol Bill' and insert ..."

It then lists the proposed agenda without the ministerial statement on an independence referendum.

It is anticipated this will not be backed in the Scottish Parliament given there is a pro-independence majority with the SNP and the Greens.

It is expected a decision will be made after 6pm.
