As lame excuses go, Boris Johnson doesn’t seem to have a leg to stand on.
He moans that nobody told him the boozy Downing Street garden party he went to was actually a party and against lockdown rules.
But he made the law, repeatedly urged us all to follow the law, had that law policed and fined offenders for breaking the law.
So suddenly pleading ignorance is unlikely to save his skin.
Tory MPs are preparing to strike against their leader, hoping to replace a tarnished liability in No10 with a fresh face in expectation that it will improve the party’s ailing fortunes and rescue their seats.
They are just acting out of self-interest.
Content to support the lies, incompetence, laziness and hypocrisy of Johnson when he delivered votes, there is nothing principled about dumping him now.
This is all about their political and personal interests.
Covid hopes
There is no hiding 438 Covid deaths, the highest UK daily toll for 11 months.
Yet infections are falling, which is why authorities are easing and ending restrictions.
The pandemic isn’t over, clearly, but the success of boosters, alongside many people choosing to limit social contacts, means we’re entering another phase.
Mistakes by the Government, from delays in implementing lockdowns to the PPE and care home scandals, had deadly consequences.
And as we return to how we used to live, we must not forget or forgive those dreadful errors which should be fully examined when the Tories allow the public inquiry to finally start.
Blade stunner
Repair Shop host Jay Blades opening up about learning to read aged 51 will hopefully encourage others who missed out earlier in life.
His new-found enthusiasm for reading shows that we’re also able to open a new chapter in our lives.
