"Tories and their Labour allies do not believe in democracy" says Councillor Kenny MacLaren

Nicola Sturgeon has reinforced her and the SNP’s desire to hold another referendum after announcing the second set of papers.

She outlined her desire to hold the referendum in light of the Tory leadership candidate race.

Ms Sturgeon used this set of papers to help paint the picture to the public as to how she will deliver the vote, as she confirms she has asked to Lord Advocate to clarify with the supreme court if Scotland has any legal standing by holding a referendum without a section 30, a power the UK Government hold when a country wants to reduce or expand reserve matters.

SNP Councillor for Paisley Northwest, Kenny Mclaren, says that it shows the democratic “deficit” that exists, while arguing that the Tories and Labour don’t believe in democracy.

He said: “The latest paper on Building New Scotland, simply highlights the democratic deficit which exists in Scotland.

“Despite the SNP winning the last Scottish Parliament elections with the clear policy of holding a new Independence Referendum, it is clear that the Tories and their Labour allies do not believe in democracy.

"Normally it is the winners of elections who are allowed to introduce the policies they put before the public at an election. With SNP and Green MSPs now having the majority of MSPS in the Scottish Parliament it is essential – if you believe in democracy – to allow them to hold an Independence Referendum.

“The Tories even campaigned on a slogan of vote Tory to stop an Independence Referendum but they clearly aren’t respecting the result of that vote -when people, in their droves, said no to the Tories – so why don’t they follow through on their election promises?”

Paisley MSP George Adam has also backed the First Minister by saying that Westminster can’t deny people in Paisley a choice.

He believes the latest paper highlights how Scotland’s voice has been ignored in recent decades and highlights failures of the UK Government such as the North Sea Oil investment plan.

Mr Adam said: “This latest paper lays bare that when decisions are made by Westminster, it’s the people of Paisley that lose out.

“Hundreds of billions in oil revenue squandered by the UK Treasury, a crippling decade of Tory austerity and the economic and social disaster that is Brexit is the legacy of Westminster control faced by families in Paisley.

“Decisions about Scotland should be taken by those who live here - not by politicians we don’t vote for or unelected Lords. That’s why Scotland needs independence - and Westminster politicians cannot continue to stand in the way of the democratic right of the people Paisley to choose a better future."

Tom Arthur SNP MSP for Renfrewshire South added: "“There will soon come a time when the opposition will have to engage in the substance of the independence argument.

"It will then be for them to explain why Westminster control would be better than the full powers of independence where Scotland takes our own decisions."
