Top Valley primary school 'ecstatic' after improved Ofsted rating

The headteacher of a primary school in Nottingham says she is "ecstatic" after it received an improved rating from Ofsted. Warren Primary Academy in Top Valley received a 'good' rating after a visit from inspectors last November.

It was previously rated 'requires improvement' by the schools regulator, however headteacher Kellie Salam said investment and a revising of the curriculum had helped the primary turn around its fortunes. "This is not the end of our journey to 'outstanding'," she said.

"We're ecstatic about this result but we're 100% committed to continuous improvement and educating our community." In the report, published in January, Ofsted found that pupils enjoyed attending the school.

"They are keen to talk about their learning in all the different subjects that they study," the report reads. "Leaders believe that their pupils have ‘endless potential’, and it is their duty to give pupils ‘limitless opportunities’."

It also said teachers have high expectations of pupils, with leaders ensuring pupils have access to a "rich curriculum". The school, which is part of the L.E.A.D Academy Trust, was criticised by inspectors in the previous report published in 2019.

Inspectors said the school had come through a time of high staff turnover and turbulence, which had an impact on the quality of learning. Ofsted also said disadvantaged pupils did not make as much progress as their peers and poor behaviour was not tolerated consistently.

Speaking on the improvements, Ms Salam said: "The L.E.A.D. Academy Trust has invested heavily in the school building, improving the education environment. The school has focused on ensuring quality first teaching is in place and upskilling staff within the team."

She said the changes and investment had helped them "immensely" in supporting disadvantaged pupils to make progress and initiatives had been created to tackle poor behaviour. In a message to parents, Ms Salam added: "Thank you for your continued commitment to the school. We hope this Ofsted rating demonstrates our commitment to your children."
