An investigation has been launched after a top neurosurgeon was found shot to death and wrapped in a sheet in his Michigan home.
53-year-old Dr Devon Hoover was a well-known and respected doctor in Detroit's Boston Edison Historic District. He was found after Detroit Police carried out a welfare check at his home.
Residents who live in the usually quiet community have described Dr Hoover as a beloved member of their community, and have been left shocked by the death.
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told local news outlet Click On Detroit: "This is so insane, and I hate that it's come to this."
She continued: "This should happen to no one who was just minding their own as this guy was a worker bee."
Police came across the grisly discovery on Sunday, April 23, but have yet to establish or share a motive. However, CBS News Detroit has reported the shooting may be related to a domestic incident 'that turned deadly'.
Another neighbour told CBS News it was "very surprising", saying "this doesn't happen out here."
There has been an outpouring of love and support for Dr Hoover, with many taking to social media to share their memories of the top doctor. One neighbour described him as an "exceptional person in nearly every way".
Neighbour Paddy Lynch took to Facebook to pay tribute to Dr Hoover, saying he was: "A loving son and brother, a brilliant, accomplished surgeon, an unrivaled collector and caretaker of all things beautiful, and a champion of art and culture.
"But perhaps, most admirably, he was beyond generous with his time and his treasure. He was one of the first neighbours to take me under their wing, offering old house advice, support, and kindness all along the way.
"Hospitality was certainly his specialty as he never hesitated to open his spectacular home to countless neighbours, friends, and charitable organisations.
"For a man small in stature, he was indeed larger than life."
Dr Hoover worked at Ascension Hospital in Detroit, where he specialised in neck and back disorders. A spokesperson for the hospital said: "Devon Hoover, MD, was a dedicated and well-respected member of the Ascension Michigan family and will be greatly missed by our community.
"Our sincere condolences and heartfelt prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow associates during this incredibly difficult time."
Dr Hoover was also affiliated with the Henry Ford Hospital - where he completed his residency, and received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He had been in practice for more than 20 years before his death.
Police have said Dr Hoover was shot, however they have not said how many times he was shot. They also revealed his car was found dumped in a different location.
It is unclear how long Dr Hoover had been dead before he was discovered. There have been reports he was, in fact, discovered in the attic of his home.
No arrests have yet been made as the investigation continues.
