Paris is the city looking for love as singletons are planning to flock there on their own in 2023, according to data by KAYAK, the travel search engine. Other popular destinations for solo travel this year include Alicante, Spain; Istanbul, Turkey; Edinburgh, Scotland and Rome, Italy.
Friday, February 10 is the first upcoming date that is busiest for singletons travelling. It is closely followed by Saturday, February 11. April Fools day is also a popular day to find potential love with a fellow solo traveller.
If you’re looking to find love in romantic cities however, it comes at a cost, the price of a getaway this year has gone up, with flight prices to Paris, France up around 25% on last year. Other destinations in the top 200 most popular destinations for solo travel in 2023 that have seen even bigger price hikes include Eindhoven, Netherlands where flight prices are up around 140% on last year, and Berlin, Germany where flight prices are up around 67% on 2022, according to KAYAK’s insights.
If you’re looking for somewhere that is cheaper to travel, this romantic season, explore destinations that are less known for their romantic setting. Like Podgorica, Montenegro, where flight prices have fallen around 34% compared to last year, or Bem, Switzerland has shown price decreases of around 33% and flight prices to Lourdes, France have dropped around 27%.
Laure Bornet, Vice President EMEA at KAYAK said: “It’s quite surprising to see that solo travellers are embracing the romance of Paris, but perhaps they are travelling to find love further afield, and Paris, a city known for romance, seems the perfect setting to find love - especially if so many singletons are heading there. They could also be inspired by the famous heroine Emily and her glamorous lifestyle, love and friendships in Paris.”
“Prices are already up this year, and it’s hard to predict what may happen from here, but destinations that are known for their romantic setting and are in high demand around the romantic season are always going to be priced slightly higher. There are some destinations where prices have dropped, and they are probably places you haven’t considered visiting for romance before. So it could be worth exploring a new city that is less known for its romantic scenery, for a getaway this Valentine’s Day.”
