Top Gun jets from hit Tom Cruise movie touch down at Prestwick Airport

Prestwick Airport resembled a scene from Top Gun this week as US fighter jets touched down.

Ayrshire plane mavericks were given a real treat as five F/A-18 Hornet jets arrived in some style.

The F18 Hornets are the same jets used for the smash-hit movie starring Tom Cruise.

Crowds gathered as the impressive jets darted through the sky before landing at the Airport around 9pm on Wednesday.

Around 100 stood overlooking the runway trying to get the best glimpse with some using long range cameras and even ladders to capture the stunning jets.

The plane was used in the recent Holywood blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick and replaced the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, which was the jet used in the original Top Gun.

The jets are also based at Miramar, California, and the site was used to film large parts of both Top Gun movies.

An American pilot was spotted sitting in his cockpit, taking pictures of the assembled crowd with his mobile phone.

Ten of the F/A-18 Hornets were originally scheduled to land at Prestwick Airport as they returned to America after NATO operation, but the other five were diverted to Reykjavik in Iceland.
