Top flight women's football comes to Lanarkshire as Rangers set to play all games here

Top flight women’s football is coming to Lanarkshire, with Rangers Women get set to ply their trade at Broadwood Stadium.

That’s as part of a one-year rolling programme that will see all women’s team home fixtures for the 2022/23 season played at the Cumbernauld stadium.

The new partnership between North Lanarkshire Council (NLC) and Rangers FC comes as the women’s game is expected to enjoy a popularity boost on the back of the Euro 2022 tournament held in England.

The host nation triumphed 2-1 in Sunday’s final against Germany in front of nearly 90,000 fans at Wembley, with the television audience peaking at 17.4 million for the final.

NLC’s Active and Creative Communities Team hope the partnership will inspire a new generation of budding footballers and fans to get involved in the growth and success of the women’s game.

NLC depute leader, councillor Tracy Carragher, told Lanarkshire Live : “This is fantastic news and another exciting development for Broadwood’s footballing story.

“Women’s football is growing across the globe and it’s great to see a professional women’s team using our excellent facilities and playing its home games here at Broadwood.

“I hope by having regular women’s fixtures in our area more people will come along and watch some live matches.

“I’d like to wish Rangers Women’s team every success for the coming season.”

Broadwood Stadium is a SFA sliver category with the latest LED sequence floodlight system fit for Women’s Champions League fixtures.

The stadium offers the chance for a capacity 8000 crowd and will host all of Rangers league, cup and potentially UEFA European fixtures - should they qualify.

Women’s and Girls’ manager, Amy McDonald, said: “We hope this will be an exciting move for our women’s first-team as we relocate our home games to Broadwood.

“We hope this move will give us the opportunity to provide a more enjoyable matchday experience for supporters and encourage many more to come and support the women’s game.”

The campus includes: a national level award winning BMX track; a state-of-the-art gymnastics facility; New College Lanarkshire’s football campus; three competition level tennis courts and a world rugby compliant pitch, which previously hosted the ladies six nations matches.
