A 36-year-old woman accused of murdering a man in the Top End last week has faced court for the first time.

Yvonne Lalda appeared in the Darwin Local Court via videolink from prison, charged with one count of murder.

She is accused of killing a 26-year-old man during what police have called a domestic violence incident in the Palmerston suburb of Gray last Thursday night.

Her lawyer, Joe Burke, did not make an application for bail but told the court his client was at risk of harm.

Judge Dick Wallace said the charge was "very serious" and listed the case to return to court on August 17.

In a statement, Northern Territory Police alleged a man was "assaulted with an edged weapon" during a domestic violence incident on Thursday night.

NT Police said officers and paramedics were called to Priest Circuit around 8:10pm, but efforts to provide first aid to the man were unsuccessful and he died at the scene.

Major Crime squad Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey described the incident as "tragic" and urged anyone experiencing domestic and family violence to seek help.
