Top Covid symptom of BA.4 and BA.5 variant detected by experts as cases surge in Scotland

Scotland is seeing a surge of Covid cases, with the Omicron sub-variants becoming the dominant strain.

With this, new data has shown the top symptoms of the new strain — as one in 17 people have the virus, according to the latest figures. This has risen from one in 18 just a week ago.

Despite no longer having access to free testing, it is estimated that 2.3 million households around the UK had Covid last week, up by 32 per cent, according to Official National Statistics [ONS]. This is the highest amount of cases reported since April.

Along with this, new research from the ZOE Health Study has detected a common symptom between those who catch the virus. According to a new report, headaches have now become the most reported symptom.

More that one in two reported having a headache before testing positive. The ZOE app allows people to record their symptoms, which is then passed on to King’s College London researchers who crunch the data.

Professor Tim Spector, who leads the ZOE Health Study app, told The Guardian: “There are definitely a lot of people who got Covid at the start of the year who are getting it again, including some with BA.4/5 who had BA.1/2 just four months ago, who thought they would be protected.”

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control labelled BA.4 and BA.5 as 'variants of concern' in mid-May this year, however there has been nothing to suggest these sub-variants have any worse symptoms.

Symptoms include:

  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Sneezing
  • Pain
